The Signs of the King Miniseries on John (2)
2
Scripture Reading John 2 11 What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.
3
John 11 47 Then the chief priests and the Pharisees called a meeting of the Sanhedrin. “What are we accomplishing?” they asked. “Here is this man performing many signs. 48 If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and then the Romans will come and take away both our temple and our nation.”
4
Introduction There is something for everyone in today’s deliberation
John selected 7 signs that Jesus did on his earthly ministry. They cover many aspects of life.
5
Turning water into wine (2:1-11)
Healing the Official’s son (4:46-54) Healing the paralytic (5:1-15) Feeding the 5000 (6:5-14) Walking on water (6:16-24) Healing the blind (9:1-7) Raising of Lazarus (11:1-45) Jesus Rising from the dead (20:1-31)

Sign #1. Turning water into wine
The Story. At a wedding. Host ran out of wine. John 2 11 What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.
7
Jesus is there in our times of celebration as he is in our times of desperation.
The presence of Jesus sanctifies our celebration so it does not go out of line. Some of us are better at recognizing God’s blessings in adversity than in prosperity. He is there at both times.
8
Sign #2. Healing the official’s son
John 4 46 Once more he visited Cana in Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine. And there was a certain royal official whose son lay sick at Capernaum.
9
John 4 47 When this man heard that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judea, he went to him and begged him to come and heal his son, who was close to death.
10
John 4 48 “Unless you people see signs and wonders,” Jesus told him, “you will never believe.”
49 The royal official said, “Sir, come down before my child dies.” 50 “Go,” Jesus replied, “your son will live.”
11
When you have faith enough to come to Jesus, he honors it.
The objective of healing does not stand alone. It is so the person will believe. When we ask for healing and pray for healing, we need to tie it to faith. The healing must be total. The body and the soul.
12
John 4 The man took Jesus at his word and departed
John 4 The man took Jesus at his word and departed. 51 While he was still on the way, his servants met him with the news that his boy was living. 52 When he inquired as to the time when his son got better, they said to him, “Yesterday, at one in the afternoon, the fever left him.”
13
John 4 53 Then the father realized that this was the exact time at which Jesus had said to him, “Your son will live.” So he and his whole household believed. 54 This was the second sign Jesus performed after coming from Judea to Galilee.
14
This is not a man of faith
This is not a man of faith. He is wondering if the healing is really by Jesus, but he isn’t unbelieving. Doubt needs verification. Doubt is the path to faith in Jesus. Endless proofs is not sincere. It is unbelief, which is choosing not to believe or looking for reasons not to believe.
15
Sign #3. Healing the paralytic
The Story A paralytic waited at the pool of Bethesda for 38 years.
16
John 5 6 When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?” 7 “Sir,” the invalid replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.”
17
John 5 8 Then Jesus said to him, “Get up. Pick up your mat and walk
John 5 8 Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.” 9 At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked.
18
John 5 14 Later Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, “See, you are well again. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you.” 15 The man went away and told the Jewish leaders that it was Jesus who had made him well.
19
The healing of his body did not result in the healing of his soul.
Beware this does not apply to you.
20
Sign #4. Feeding the 5,000 Story
A great crowd followed Jesus around even into deserted places. The people became hungry Jesus fed them with 5 buns and 2 fish 12 baskets left over
21
John 6 15 Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself.
22
People remembered Manna in the wilderness, that feeding the people was an act of God.
While the feeding of the people was a miracle, the giving of something for nothing tends to create something bad in the receiver.
23
Matthew 6 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
24
Sign #5. Walking on water The Story
The disciples in a boat trying to get across Galilee A storm arose Jesus came to them walking on water
25
John 6 19 When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus approaching the boat, walking on the water; and they were frightened. 20 But he said to them, “It is I; don’t be afraid.” 21 Then they were willing to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the shore where they were heading.
26
Jesus comes to you in your time of fear and anxiety
Jesus comes to you in your time of fear and anxiety. He delivers by his presence and by bringing your boat to shore. Take Jesus on board and he will take you to shore.
27
Sign #6. Healing the blind man
Story A man born blind Who sinned? This man or his parents?
28
Sign #6. Healing the blind man
John 9 3 “Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him.
29
Jesus made mud and applied to his eyes; and asked him to wash in the pool of Siloam.
Who healed you? He couldn’t say. (like the paralytic).
30
John 9 30 The man answered, “Now that is remarkable
John 9 30 The man answered, “Now that is remarkable! You don’t know where he comes from, yet he opened my eyes. 31 We know that God does not listen to sinners. He listens to the godly person who does his will. 32 Nobody has ever heard of opening the eyes of a man born blind. 33 If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.”
31
John 9 34 To this they replied, “You were steeped in sin at birth; how dare you lecture us!” And they threw him out. 35 Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and when he found him, he said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?”
32
John 9 36 “Who is he, sir. ” the man asked
John 9 36 “Who is he, sir?” the man asked. “Tell me so that I may believe in him.” 37 Jesus said, “You have now seen him; in fact, he is the one speaking with you.” 38 Then the man said, “Lord, I believe,” and he worshiped him.
33

34
Sign #7. Raising of Lazarus from death
The Story Martha, Mary, Lazarus Lazarus very sick. Jesus was told, but delayed two days. By the time Jesus arrived, Lazarus had died. Jesus went to the tomb
35
John 11 38 Jesus therefore, becoming enraged again in himself, came to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it. (Jubilee Bible)
36
John 11 39 “Remove the stone,” Jesus said
John “Remove the stone,” Jesus said. Martha, the dead man’s sister, told Him, “Lord, he’s already decaying. It’s been four days.” 40 Jesus said to her, “Didn’t I tell you that if you believed you would see the glory of God?”
37
John 11 41 So they removed the stone
John 11 41 So they removed the stone. Then Jesus raised His eyes and said, “Father, I thank You that You heard Me. 42 I know that You always hear Me, but because of the crowd standing here I said this, so they may believe You sent Me.”
38
John 11 43 After He said this, He shouted with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” 44 The dead man came out bound hand and foot with linen strips and with his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Loose him and let him go.” (HCSB)
39
Jesus was enraged at disease and death. Death is the enemy.
Believe that when you believe in Jesus you have life. He will raise you from the dead.
40

43
John 20 “They have taken my Lord away,” she said, “and I don’t know where they have put him.” 14 At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus.
44

45
John 20 16 Jesus said to her, “Mary.”
She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means “Teacher”).
46
The final sign of Jesus turned fearful men into fearless men.
The tentative followers became tenacious disciples.
47
Now there is no reason not to entrust your life to Jesus because he conquered your ultimate enemy—death.
48
Who is Jesus? 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
