Like Terms Remember only the variables have to be the same. The coefficients ( the number you multiply the variable by) do not have to be the same. You can add like terms to make one term. You must use your integer rules when you have negative coefficients.

Unlike Terms Terms that do not have the same variables. You cannot add these terms because they are not like terms.

Combining Like Terms in Expressions
In this expression there are only 2 like terms. We can combine 4x and -6x. We cannot add anything to 7y or 7.
