1 Nucleic Acids

2 Learning Objectives Describe the relationship between nucleotides and nucleic acids Name the two types of nucleic acids

3 Two Types of Nucleic Acid
DNA: (Deoxyribonucleic acid) Contains the instructions that controls the cell. RNA: (Ribonucleic acid) Uses instructions from DNA to build proteins.

4 Monomer of Nucleic Acids Nucleotide
Nucleic acids are polymers assembled from individual monomers known as nucleotides.

5 Parts of a Nucleotide Phosphate Nitrogenous Base Sugar
One sugar, one phosphate and one nitrogenous base make a nucleotide.

6 Structure of DNA The DNA backbone is made of alternating phosphates and deoxyribose sugar The rungs are nitrogenase bases Nitrogenous Bases = Deoxyribose Sugar = Phosphate

7 Function of Nucleic Acids
Large complex molecules that store and transmit hereditary information for all living things

8 Model DNA using marshmallows

9 Sugar – large white 8 Phosphate – sm. white 8 Base – candy corn 8 Toothpicks 12-15
