History in the making… The first people there, were there before 1800BC The first tribe was call the Cymric Celtics Over the course of the next 300 years… The re was an invasion of the British The region then became known as Bretagne (The French word for British) The people who migrated there we then known as “Bretons” These are menhirs and dolmens, these were probably constructed between 3500 and 1800 BC

A brief History… Bretagne never felt they were apart of France
Only a few parts in Bretagne spoke French In the 7th and 8th centuries the people of Bretagne created a set of laws. In the 9th century Charlemagne decided to take all the credit for these laws The people did not like this…

Freedom at last … In 846 the people were united under a national hero Nomenoë He lead the revolt against king Charles the Bal He ended up winning their independence

Anne de Bretagne Duchess of Brittany
In 1491 he married the French king Charles VIII At this point Brittany was temporarily united with France She married again, this time to Louis XII. The union with France became formal The treaty of 1532 made Brittany a French province.

750 mile long coast line It would be twice as long if it were not jagged Called Armor, Breton for "country of the sea" The waves can reach 100 feet in height There are numerous islands off the coast off Brittany, such as Belle-Ile, La Baule, Ushant and Île-aux-Moines

The Economy Fishing, farming and tourism are the big three
Of the three Fishing is the most important About a third of France’s fishing catch As far as farming goes… Brittany is a leading producer of milk products Due to a lack of energy and raw materials, industries have remained undeveloped

Done with Buckwheat Buckwheat is easily grown in Brittany Chouchen A honey-based alcohol beverage According to mythology, it was the drink of the elves Muscadet A light fresh and fruity white wine Goes with any food platter

Rennes The old town preserves the narrow medieval streets, which miraculously escaped from the huge fire of 1720, accidentally started by a drunk carpenter, which unfortunately destroyed most of the town.
