Introduction to Oceans and Climate
LAB 1, September 11, 2018 Lab Assistant: Teddy Allen

KEY TERMS: Isopleth Variable Isobar pressure Isotherm temperature
Isodrosotherm Dewpoint temperature Isotach wind speed Isohyet Rainfall (precipitation) Isohale salinity Isoecho radar reflectivity Isodop Doppler velocity on a radar display GRADIENT: The spatial rate of change of a quantity. Can you give examples?

500hPa air temperature (February 2018) -- VALUE PLOTS

500hPa air temperature (February 2018) -- VALUE PLOTS and CONTOUR

500hPa air temperature (February 2018) -- CONTOUR (contour interval?)

500hPa air temperature (February 2018) -- CONTOUR (contour interval?)

500hPa air temperature (February 2018) -- CONTOUR FILLED (contour interval?)

500hPa air temperature (February 2018) -- COLOR SHADED (contour interval???)

500hPa air temperature (February 2018) -- COLOR SHADED (contour interval???)

500hPa air temperature (February 2018) -- test contours and shades match value!

Where are the contours? Where are areas of strong and weak gradients? There are 2 displayed variables, but 3 display types. What are the variables? Why 3 display types?

Here are a few guidelines in contour analysis:
Isopleths should never cross Isopleths should not branch or fork Only the area on the map that has data should be contoured You should appropriately label your isopleths
