Silex Digital Engineer Program Overview
Subject: Silex Digital Engineer Program Overview April, 2004:
2
Program Highlights The Silex Digital Engineer is the fastest and easiest way to design your exhaust system for diesel or natural gas engines. It will Guide you through the selection and design of the complete exhaust system. Reduce the chance of errors and ensure each component fits together. Provide acoustical and back pressure predictions that are supported by over 20 years of silencer development. Instantly compare silencer grades based on back pressure and acoustical results.
3
Program Features New sizing Wizard that guides you through the creation and selection of engines and silencers for each new project. Engine database with over 1,800 diesel and gas engines from major manufacturers including Caterpillar, Cummins, Kohler, Detroit Diesel, Waukesha, Generac and Mitsubishi. Silencer database with silencers up to 40” inlet in 7 different design and acoustical levels. Product spec sheets, price lists and sales drawings. Improved acoustical predictions by silencer grade and engine model. Ability to save and recall projects by either project name, project number or creation date. Project Summary and Bill of Material Reports detailing acoustical and backpressure performance

Secure Site Home Page The Secure Site gives you access to Silex’s extensive catalogue of silencers and exhaust accessories. You can review products by Product line, by engine model through our Engineering Manuals or by Accessing the sizing program through the Silex Digital Engineer hyperlink or by clicking on the Sizing Program header.
6
Sizing Program Section
Launch the Sizing Program by clicking on the program icon.
7
Your username is displayed in the top right hand corner of the screen.
Project List Your username is displayed in the top right hand corner of the screen. To create a new project click on the New Project Wizard and then click on Begin.

10
Main Project Page The Main Project page has several sections.
The project name and number is displayed as part of the page heading. The project number is automatically assigned by the program. You can open and close the Detail Sections by clicking on the Red Section Headings.
11
Project Detail The project detail page allows you to enter the full project name and address as well as a description of the project. This information will print on both the Project Summary and Material Reports. You can also determine if the project will require a secondary silencer, connector, emissions or intake silencer in the exhaust system. Required calculations are also set on this page.
12
Secondary Silencer and Connector Detail
If you answer “Yes” to the Secondary Silencer or Connector questions on the Project Detail page, the Secondary Silencer Detail and Connector Detail sections will appear on the Main Project Page.
13
Engine Detail The Engine Detail section allows you to select diesel and natural gas gensets and engines from an extensive database of OEM engine manufacturers. Use the User Input or Generic Engine options to enter non-catalogue gensets or engines. The Generic Engine option automatically calculates raw engine noise based on the horsepower of the engine you enter.
14
Catalog Database Option
You can then select the specific engine or genset from the pull down list based on the OEM you selected previously.. Select the appropriate OEM database from the pull down list.
15
Engine Database All of the fields in blue fill automatically from the engine database and can not be changed by the user. When available, the program gives you access to GA Drawings and List Prices for Pre-Engineered Exhaust Systems for the specific genset or engine you have selected.
16
Pre-Engineered Exhaust Systems
Links to the Silex Engineering Manuals include General Arrangement Drawings as well as a Detailed List of Pre-engineered Exhaust Components for that specific OEM engine or genset.
17
Primary Silencer Detail
The Primary Silencer Detail page allows you to select from hundreds of available Silex Silencers. Select the Silencer series you require for your specific application from the pull down list Based on your exhaust system layout, select the appropriate silencer orientation from the pull down list provided. The program automatically selects the optimum silencer size based on the engine’s exhaust flow, temperature and outlet configuration. Select the acoustical performance of the silencer required .
18
Silencer Selection Once you have selected a specific silencer series, acoustical grade and size, the program calculates the system back pressure and insertion loss through the silencer. You have the option of changing the silencer size based on your specific exhaust system design requirements.
19
Silencer Selection Once you have finalized your silencer selection, the program gives you links to Silencer Specification Sheets, Sales Drawings and Price Lists.
20
Silencer Information Click on the links to silencer specification sheets, price lists and general arrangement drawings.
21
Connector Detail The Connector Detail page allows you to select either a Flex Connector or Wye Connector. The program automatically sizes the connectors based on the outlet size of the engine, the inlet size of the silencer, the silencer configuration and the engine outlet configuration. You can change the inlet and outlet connections for each connector as required from the pull down list provided.
22
Piping Detail The Piping Section allows the user to detail additional exhaust components such as elbows, expansion joints, piping and exhaust stacks for your project’s exhaust system. The program will list all of the piping components you select for the project and summarize the pressure drop through each component.
23
Piping Detail The piping components are added using the Piping Detail page. Your engine, silencer and connection selections are summarized at the top of the page. You can choose from tube or pipe. You select piping elements from the pull down list. Or select specific connection types for each component. You can select up to 20 different piping and exhaust components for each project.
24
Acoustical Details The Acoustical Detail page summarizes the overall acoustical performance based on the exhaust components selected by octave band You can change the distance of the receiver to review the acoustic performance at various distances and angles.
25
Project Summary Report
From the Main Project page, you can generate two reports. The Project Summary Report details the engine information and summarizes the backpressure and acoustical performance of the silencer and exhaust components selected for the project. These reports can either be displayed on your screen, printed or ed.
26
Material Report The Material Report details all of the exhaust components selected for the project.
