Earth and It’s Oceans

Earth It’s the 3rd planet from the Sun, in between Venus and Mars.
It’s the only planet that has life, and it’s the only planet that has water existing in all 3 phases of matter: Solid, Liquid, Gas

Water? The existence of water on Earth is thought to have come from ice that was on meteorites that bombarded the Earth during it’s early stages of formation

Water Cycle Over billions of years this same water has been cycling through all 3 phases of matter due to the simple processes within Earth’s Water Cycle.

The Water Cycle

The Water Cycle Can you place the steps of the water cycle into the diagram: Precipitation 2) Evaporation 3) Runoff 4) Condensation 5) Infiltration

Hydrosphere All this liquid water is housed within a layer of Earth known as the hydrosphere. The hydrosphere consists of: -Lakes, Streams, Rivers, Underground Water, and all of the Oceans

Earth’s Oceans As big as Earth is, 70 % of all the surface of Earth is covered in salt water (oceans).

List of Earth’s Oceans From Smallest to Largest in Size:
Arctic (North Pole) Southern Antarctic (South Pole) Indian Atlantic Pacific Place the names of the oceans onto the map where you believe they are located.

The Oceans Even though 70% of Earth’s surface is covered in water, only 3% of this water is actually fresh water. That means that 97% of all Earth’s water is actually salt water. Of this 3% of fresh water, only 1% is actually in liquid form and is drinkable for humans. The remaining fresh water is in solid form frozen in ice caps or snow.

Humans and Oceans In 2010, there were an estimated 125 million people that lived along the coast lines of the United States. Worldwide, roughly 1 billion people live within a range of 0-60 feet elevation above sea level.

Are Ocean Levels Rising?
Between the years the level of the oceans had risen roughly 7.7 inches. Scientist predict that by the year 2100 the average sea level will rise between 1 and 4 feet. The cause for this rising of water is the release of fresh/salty water from melting of polar ice caps and continental glaciers. The water basically drains into the oceans, causing them to rise.
