College Credit Plus CCP Presentation MHS Community Room January 24, 2019 Good Evening. Allow me to quote directly from the Sinclair Community College PSEO Overview. "The Post Secondary Enrollment Options Program provides high school students who are intellectually and socially capable of doing college work with an additional educational option. This program is intended to provide expanded opportunities for appropriately qualified high school students to experience course work at the college or university level. College courses should either contribute to or supplement the broad academic preparation needed by high school students"

What is College Credit Plus (CCP)?
CCP is a way for you to earn college and high school credit at the same time by taking college courses. Students enroll in college courses and adhere to the requirements of the college Students must be Ohio residents

Who can participate? Students in grades 7-12 are eligible to apply for CCP to any public college or participating private college. The college will admit the student based on an assessment exam to determine their college readiness in one or more subject areas. Students must submit their CCP Intent to Participate form and meet with their counselor by March 29th in order to participate in either semester the following academic year, but are not required to participate in both semesters or at all. After attending this meeting, you may choose not to have an individual meeting (but recommend for grades 6-8).

How do students earn HS credit for college courses?
CCP allows students to earn college credit and apply that credit towards their HS graduation requirements as high school credits. Students who successfully complete a 3 credit- hour (or more) college course will result in 1.0 Carnegie unit earned at the HS. A 2 credit-hour course will result in 2/3 of a HS credit, and 1 credit-hour course will result in 1/3 of a HS credit.

How many CCP courses can a student take?
Students can earn up to 30 college credit hours per academic year, including summer terms. This is equivalent to 10 HS credits per academic year (summer included). No more than 120 college credit hours total CCP can include summer term courses which will count toward the first semester of the academic school year. Summer terms have earlier deadlines for registration and may begin in May.

How are HS graduation requirements affected?
HS graduation requirements will not be waived as a result of participation in CCP. Students must still meet all of the MHS graduation requirements. Class of 2019 and beyond must also score at least 18 points on the end of course exams in the following subjects (English 9, English 10, Algebra I/IB, Geometry, Biology, American History, and Government).

Where can students take college classes?
Students can apply to take classes at any public college/university or participating private institution of higher learning, and may apply to multiple institutions. Students have various options as to where they can take classes based on the options provided by the college the college, or online). Some classes at MHS may have opportunities to earn college credit built into them.

Will CCP grades appear on a student’s HS transcript?
Yes. HS credit will be awarded for any CCP course that is successfully completed. These courses will be listed on the student’s HS transcript and included in their GPA. CCP courses will be weighted if MHS has an AP course in that curricular area (ex. CCP English Course would be weighted because MHS offers AP English, even though archived for ).

How does CCP impact athletic eligibility?
Students participating in CCP courses must still meet the eligibility requirements set by the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA). Students must be passing the equivalent of 2.5 credits each semester with a 1.55 GPA to be eligible at MHS.

What courses are available through CCP?
Once admitted to a college for CCP, students may take any course in the college catalogue that applies towards a degree or professional certificate, in a subject area that the student is college-ready as determined by placement testing. Students are not permitted to take remedial or religious courses through CCP.

Who pays for CCP courses?
Students attending a public college/university will not be charged for tuition, books or fees. Students attending a private college may be charged for books and fees.

What happens if a student fails a course?
If a student does not successfully complete a course, they will receive an “F” on their HS and college transcript. MCS will seek reimbursement for the amount of state funds paid for that college course. Students must be eligible for free/reduced lunch through completion of proper paperwork in order to waive the fee.

CCP PROBATION If a student earns less than a 2.0 GPA in CCP courses or WD from 2 or more courses in a term. May not enroll in another CCP course in that curricular area of which a D or F was earned. May only enroll in 1 CCP class for the next college term.

Who is responsible for transportation?
The student and/or parent is responsible for transportation to and from the college and any parking fees if applicable.

What are the academic and social responsibilities?
Students participating in CCP will be expected to follow all rules and regulations set by the college/university. Students will also be expected to follow all MCS school rules and regulations outlined in the student handbook. Once enrolled in CCP students will be eligible to receive advising from campus-based support services.

Academic Responsibilities
It is the student’s responsibility as FERPA protects student education rights. Parents become mentors as colleges will not contact parent or high school if student is not attending class or failing.

Will CCP credits transfer?
Credits earned at the college/university will be accepted at that university. Credits will transfer to any state school in Ohio (Transfer Assurance Guidelines). Acceptance of CCP credits at other colleges/universities is at the discretion of those schools. Any credits taken through PSEO will be accepted by that university but may bot transfer to a different university. For example: a student earns a PSEO psychology 101 credit from Wright State. The student then graduates from FHS and attends Duke University. That psychology 101 credit may not be accepted at Duke.

Scheduling Conflicts Scheduling conflicts among college courses and MCS courses/activities are NOT the responsibility of MCS. Conflicts will be resolved using the MCS schedule as a priority. Changes to a student’s schedule resulting from failing to complete, or dropping a college course, must occur within the guidelines specified in the MHS Course of Study book. Students must maintain at least a minimum of 2.5 HS credits per semester (verify with your counselor). (let audience read slide first) If students have college classes scheduled during the school day, then the students may have to make choices between college and high school courses. However, a high school course required for graduation takes precedence. If a student fails or drops a PSEO course after these deadlines, students will not be able to schedule replacement classes at the high school.

Attendance Attendance at MCS for CCP students is required only during the classes scheduled at MCS. Students may not be on MCS grounds if they are not scheduled for a MCS class (or study hall) at that particular time. (read the first off the screen) If PSEO students miss more than the allotted days from any high school course, as described in the FHS attendance policy, PSEO credits may be forfeited.

Student Responsibilities
Attending Middletown City School classes is top priority. On days when the MCS schedule is altered in advance, (Wednesday MAP days, state tests, and assembly days) students are expected to make the necessary arrangements to attend their MCS classes, regardless of what time their CCP classes are during the day. PSEO students must make arrangements to attend FHS courses on the days when the high school schedule is altered in advance. For example during early release days, semester or final exams, homeroom days, and assembly days the high school schedule is altered and classes are moved to accommodate the specific need. PSEO students need to attend all of their high school classes on those days. They will not be excused from their high school classes on those days.

Notification of Participation
The college/university must send written notice to all appropriate parties (student, parent, high school district) within ten days of enrolling. The student should meet with counselor to adjust schedule as soon as they have their CCP classes scheduled. Upon receiving their college schedule of classes or classes in the summer, students should meet with their guidance counselor to adjust their schedule at FHS. We ask that students schedule classes at Fairborn High School as if they do not plan on participating in PSEO. That will give them their preferred schedule if they choose not to continue in the PSEO process. Students must provide a copy of their college schedule each term to their guidance counselor to confirm their registration.

Cons CCP credits may not be accepted at all universities.
CCP students will be in the same classes as college-age as well as non-traditional students. College schedule could conflict with extra- curricular activities. College vacations and high school breaks may run at different times. Traveling in poor weather conditions. Read off screen and explain as you go.

Cons continued If student fails or withdraws too late from the college course, student may be responsible to repay the district for tuition The grades on the college transcript are on the college transcript forever If student performs poorly, they may be placed on academic probation by the college including future financial aid may be negatively impacted.

Acknowledgement of Information/Counseling Form
Any student who is interested in participating in CCP, must return signed Intent to Participate form by March 29th (No late forms accepted). Grades 6-8 should schedule to meet with their counselor by 3/29, HS students optional after attending this meeting. Students who miss this deadline will not be allowed to participate. You must also turn in the college Authorization page to your counselor by March 29. At this time, let me direct you to the PSEO Acknowledgement of Information/Counseling form you have received. At the conclusion of this program, we will have discussed the ten areas noted. The state law which established the PSEO program mandates that both a parent and the student attend the presentation explaining their rights and responsibilities as participants in the program. This Acknowledgement of Information/Counseling form must be signed by a parent and the student and submitted to the FHS guidance office no later than March 31, This completed form indicated your intent to pursue the application process. At any time up to actually starting college classes, you may stop the process. By meeting the March 31 deadline, you have secured our permission to participate in the PSEO program.

CCP Process 1. Submit Intent to Participate form and college Authorization page to your counselor before March 29th (earlier the better). 2. Student and parent schedule to meet with appropriate counselor by March 29th (recommended for grades 6-8, optional for grades 9-11 if attended the general meeting). 3. Go online to complete college application for admission to CCP (know the deadlines for different colleges but by May 1).

CCP Process Continued 4. Your counselor will submit the Authorization page and transcript to the college. 5. College will notify you to schedule placement testing (Accuplacer) through college admission office if required. Some colleges may use the ACT as a placement test. ACT offered 4/13, must register by 3/8. All juniors will test on 2/20 at the high school with no fee. Waivers available to juniors after that, others must pay.

CCP Process Continued 6. After the student is accepted to the university, they will follow that school’s instructions for registration and scheduling. 7. After receiving the college schedule for fall term, contact your guidance counselor to make necessary adjustments to your MCS schedule and give them a copy of college schedule. (If applying for summer term, bring to counselor before summer term or May 24th at latest.

CCP Process Continued 8. If you do not turn in an Intent to Participate form and Authorization page (by 3/29), we will not submit anything to any college. 9. You may decide not to participate in the fall but may participate in the spring once approved. You are not committed to participate the entire school year. YOU MUST TURN IN THE FORMS AND MEET IN MARCH TO PARTICIPATE AT ANY TIME DURING THE YEAR.
