3 Aims: We will look at phase 3 phonics in more detail. ( diagraphs, trigraphs etc ) We will learn how to read words with split diagraphs. Phonics screening test.

5 Some reminders: definitions:
Phonemes: Smallest sound that you can hear in a word. Sound Graphemes: Letter/letters representing a sound. S, sh, Letter name Oral blending: Hearing a series of spoken sounds and merging them together to make a spoken word – no text is used. For example, when a teacher calls out ‘b-u-s’, the children say ‘bus’. Blending: Recognising the letter sounds in a written word. C-a-t : cat Segmenting: Identifying the individual sounds in a spoken word Some sounds are represented by a single letter and others are represented by 2 or 3 letters.

New Vocabulary today: Digraphs : ay, ai, ee, ea, ie, sh, ch, nk, oo, ue, oa, ow, th, ou, ow, oy, oi, ir, er, ur, aw, au, ph, wh, ey, c,(sauce) y (happy) Trigraphs; igh, air, are, ire, ure, tch, ear Split diagraphs: a-e, i-e, o-e, u-e, e-e

7 Phases in teaching phonics:
Phase 3 :j,v,w,x,y,z,zz,qu,ch,sh,th,ng,ai,ee,igh,oa,oo,oo,ar,or,ur,ow,oi,ear,air Ure,er Phase 5: Children will learn different ways to represent one sound. e.g, ay, ai and a-e Phase 6: Recognising irregular and more complex words- year 2

9 A phonics lesson : Triagraph Introduce the sound (igh) sound cards Read the sound. Oral blending Segmenting for writing. Reading words Writing words

10 What is the Phonics Screening Check?
Every Year 1 child in the country will take the assessment in the same week. Phonics screening takes place in the month of June. The check is very similar to tasks the children already complete during phonics lessons. Section one and section two. Phonics check video

11 40 words 20 real/ 20 nonsense Alien words have an alien/ monster image next to them. 1:1 with a teacher 2 to 10 minutes Rest breaks if necessary Children need to score 32/40 marks in order to pass the test.

12 How will the school support?
Daily phonics 20 minutes. Up to date training for all staff. Send home spellings to learn to read and spell consolidating sounds taught in school. On going assessments of sounds and tricky words. Practise tests. Extra resource packs will be sent home– practical games, activities, flash cards etc. Interventions to boost gaps from now and throughout the year. Play phonics games online.

13 Phonics is not the only thing needed to become a fluent reader Keep asking questions about books Focus in Y2 - reading comprehension ENJOY PLAYING WITH LETTERS AND SOUNDS AND STORIES – YOUR CHILD IS ONLY 5 OR 6! Keep it fun! Love learning! Don’t worry… we are here to help!
