The Raging Tempest Mark 4:37-41
One of the harder passages to understand in the bible pertain to the calling of God. The teaching of John 3 leads into understanding this.
8
Corrosion of Fear “Don’t you care?” Not “do you know” or “can you do something” Fear erased all of their knowledge The terror of sudden changes on the sea 1. Jesus sleeps while they panic 2. This was no minor storm, and these were not inexperienced seamen
9
David’s Fear Psalm 44: You have forgotten us - You have crushed us - You have killed us Like a prophecy of the storm of Mark 4 “Wake Up!” vs 23
10
God Used Storms To test Job – Job 1:18-19 To test Paul – Acts 27:20 To turn Jonah – Jonah 1:14 To speak to Job – Job 40:6 To deliver Israel – Exodus 14:21 Job 1:18 While he was still speaking, another also came and said, "Your sons and your daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother's house, 19 and behold, a great wind came from across the wilderness and struck the four corners of the house, and it fell on the young people and they died, and I alone have escaped to tell you.“ Ac 27:20 Since neither sun nor stars appeared for many days, and no small storm was assailing us, from then on all hope of our being saved was gradually abandoned. Jon 1:4 ¶ The LORD hurled a great wind on the sea and there was a great storm on the sea so that the ship was about to break up.
11
Rebuking the Storm Mark 1:25 The storm INSTANTLY stilled
Mr 1:25 And Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be quiet, and come out of him!"
12
Fear of the Lord Apostles fear was GREATER now than before - Realization of Jesus’ identity - Realization of their faith failure
13
Paul’s Response Paul responded to David’s psalm Romans 8: Overwhelmingly Conquer - Inability to be separated from God Paul quotes David’s psalm of fear He makes it a psalm of victory

Storms Reveal God Psalm 107:23-30 When storms come: Force yourself to trust God He ALWAYS brings His own through Do not come out of it ashamed Ps 107:23 ¶ Those who go down to the sea in ships, Who do business on great waters; 24 They have seen the works of the LORD, And His wonders in the deep. 25 For He spoke and raised up a stormy wind, Which lifted up the waves of the sea. 26 They rose up to the heavens, they went down to the depths; Their soul melted away in their misery. 27 They reeled and staggered like a drunken man, And were at their wits' end. 28 Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, And He brought them out of their distresses. 29 He caused the storm to be still, So that the waves of the sea were hushed. 30 Then they were glad because they were quiet, So He guided them to their desired haven.

The Sea of Our Lives “With joy I shall make the blest harbor, And rest on the blissful shore” Our songs reflect: Life is a journey, NOT a destination Where are you headed? Mt 23:16 "Woe to you, blind guides, who say, 'Whoever swears by the temple, that is nothing; but whoever swears by the gold of the temple is obligated.'17 "You fools and blind men! Which is more important, the gold or the temple that sanctified the gold? 18 "And, 'Whoever swears by the altar, that is nothing, but whoever swears by the offering on it, he is obligated.' 19 "You blind men, which is more important, the offering, or the altar that sanctifies the offering? 20 "Therefore, whoever swears by the altar, swears both by the altar and by everything on it. 21 "And whoever swears by the temple, swears both by the temple and by Him who dwells within it.
17
The Sea of Our Lives Will you find rest at the end? Will you find terror?

The Sea of Our Lives Obedience to God 1. Hearing and believing 2. Confessing our faith 3. Leaving the shores of sin 4. Being baptized into Christ 5. Remaining on course to home Mt 23:16 "Woe to you, blind guides, who say, 'Whoever swears by the temple, that is nothing; but whoever swears by the gold of the temple is obligated.'17 "You fools and blind men!
