1 CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM

2 CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM
Also known as the Circulatory System. CARDIO = HEART VASCULAR = VESSELS Vessels carry blood through the body.

3 PURPOSE OF THE CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM
1. Blood carries needed substances to the bodies cells. Oxygen Glucose Other needed nutrients 2. Blood picks up waste from cells. Carbon Dioxide Other wastes 3. Blood transports disease-fighting cells.

4 PATHWAY OF BLOOD Lungs Left side of Heart Body Right Side

5 THE HEART Hollow, muscular organ that pumps blood throughout the body.
Heart Structure: Heart has two sides…. Right side Left side Each side has two compartments… Upper chamber  Atrium Lower chamber  Ventricle

6 RIGHT ATRIUM LEFT ATRIUM RIGHT VENTRICLE LEFT VENTRICLE

7 ATRIUM Upper chambers of the heart.
Receives blood that comes into the heart. Left Atrium Receives oxygenated blood from the LUNGS Right Atrium Receives deoxygenated blood from the BODY

8 VENTRICLE Lower chambers of the heart. Sends blood out of heart.
Left Ventricle Pumps oxygen-rich blood to BODY Right Ventricle Pumps oxygen-poor blood to LUNGS

9

10 HEART VALVES Flap of tissue that prevents blood from flowing backwards. Valves are located between the ventricles and the blood vessels carrying blood away from the heart.

11 HEART BEAT PACEMAKER  Group of cells found in the right atrium.
Sends a signal that makes the heart muscle cells contract. Regulates the beating of the heart.

12 CIRCULATION Coronary Circulation Pulmonary Circulation
Systematic Circulation

13 CORONARY CIRCULATION Heart has own blood vessels that supply it with nutrients and oxygen and remove wastes. When coronary circulation is blocked, oxygen and nutrients cannot reach all the cells of the heart. This results in a heart attack.

14 PULMONARY CIRCULATION
Flow of blood through the heart to the lungs and back to the heart. Deoxygenated blood enters lungs, oxygen diffuses into the blood. The oxygenated blood now returns to the heart to be pumped throughout the body.

15 SYSTEMATIC CIRCULATION
Oxygen-rich blood moves to all your organs and body tissues. Oxygen-poor blood returns to the heart to get pumped to the lungs for a refill of oxygen. Blood traveling through arteries drop of oxygen and nutrients. Blood picks up CO2 and wastes and travels to heart through veins.
