2 Mental/Emotional Health-
- the ability to accept yourself and others adapt to and cope with emotions deal with the problems and challenges you meet in life.

3 Indicators of positive Mental/Emotional Health:
Do you see yourself and life (in general)in positive ways? Do you face life challenges with confidence? Do you accept that things will not always go your way? Do you motivate yourself to achieve goals? Do you understand and cope with feelings? Do you focus on your strengths? Do you accept constructive criticism and learn from your mistakes? Do you have a healthy sense of humor? Do you bounce back from disappointment?

6 Types of Mental Health Problems:
Mental Illness- A disorder that affects a person’s thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Anxiety Disorders Personality Disorders Mood Disorders Types of Mental Health Problems:

7 Anxiety Disorder – A condition in which intense anxiety or fear keeps a person from functioning normally.

8 Types of anxiety disorders:
General Anxiety worry about everyday life events Obsessive Compulsive Disorder bad thoughts followed by a ritual/routine to relieve the anxiety Phobias strong irrational fear reactions Social Phobias Extreme shyness & self consciousness Panic Attacks Abrupt onset of intense fear Post Traumatic Stress Disorder High stress & symptoms develop after a traumatic event

9 Personality Disorder –
A variety of psychological conditions that affect a person’s ability to get along with others. The person has an unhealthy pattern of thinking, functioning and behaving. Examples: Schizophrenia Impulse Control

10 Personality Disorders
Schizophrenia – an illness that harms how your brain works and how you think. People who have schizophrenia Hear and sometimes see things that are not there (hallucinations) Believe some things that are not true (delusions) Think that some people are trying to harm them (paranoia). Reality is interpreted abnormally. Personality Disorders

11 Personality Disorders Impulse Control Disorder-
A disorder characterized by a failure to resist an impulse, drive, or temptation to perform an act that is harmful to the person or to others. Examples: Compulsive gambling Compulsive shopping Pyromania

12 Mood Disorder – Examples:
A disorder in which a person has extreme uncontrollable mood changes. Examples: Bipolar Clinical Depression

13 Mood Disorders Bipolar Disorder (Manic-Depressive)-
A condition that causes extreme shifts in mood. People may spend weeks feeling like they're on top of the world before plunging into depression.

14 National Suicide Prevention Lifeline:
Clinical Depression – A mood disorder in which people lose interest in life and can no longer find enjoyment in anything. 20% of teens experience depression before they reach adulthood. This can lead to alcohol, drug use and the desire to harm themselves/take their life. Suicide is an attempt to solve a problem of intense emotional pain with impaired problem- solving skills. An extreme, harmful eating behavior that can cause serious illness or even death. Why are eating disorders considered to be a mental illness?

17 Types of eating disorders
Anorexia Nervosa: The irrational fear of becoming obese results in severe weight loss from self-imposed starvation. Bulimia Nervosa: Binge eating followed by purging (purging is clearing the digestive system by vomiting or taking a laxative)
