Wisdom Literature Wisdom literature is a genre of literature common in the ancient Near East. It consists of statements by sages and wise men that offer teachings about divinity and virtue. Although this genre uses techniques of traditional oral story-telling, it was disseminated in written form.
29
Wisdom Literature (books)
Old Testament books in Protestant Bible: Job Psalms Proverbs Ecclesiastes Song of Solomon
30
Two kinds of Wisdom in James 3:13-18
Who among you is wise and understanding? Let him show by his good behavior his deeds in the gentleness of wisdom. But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, do not be arrogant and so lie against the truth. This wisdom is not that which comes down from above but is earthly, natural, demonic.
31
James 3 (contd) For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every evil thing. But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without hypocrisy. And the seed whose fruit is righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.
32
God’s great promise: thinking & doing
“But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all men generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him. But let him ask in faith without any doubting; for the one who doubts is like the surf of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. For let not that man expect that he will receive anything from the Lord, being a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.
33
Table talk Have you ever sought God’s wisdom and gotten it? How was it given to you? Have you told others how they might also find His wisdom? Why would sharing the gospel with others relate to this issue?
34
Summary Jesus increased in wisdom. Are we still learning to think and act like God? Next week: Dr. Dale Matthews will be leading the topic, “Jesus Increased in Stature.” Prayer around our tables
