Organizing Your Macbeth Body Paragraphs
31
Organizing Your Paper Thesis Statement Body ¶: Topic Sentence 1
32
The Introductory Paragraph
Ingredients in the introduction: An interesting “HOOK” A lead in to your thesis statement including the name of the play, the author, and the topic. You one sentence thesis statement (the last sentence in the intro). A good introduction should be at least 5-7 sentences
33
The Introductory Paragraph
Questions to ask myself Is my introduction interesting? Can a “new” person follow me? Have I introduced Macbeth and William Shakespeare? Is my thesis statement the last sentence in my introduction Am I using the provided thesis statement?
34
Unity in the Paragraph Topic Sentence
Every sentence in a paragraph should support the main idea expressed in the topic sentence. Topic Sentence sentence sentence sentence sentence
35
The concluding or clincher sentence
Restate the topic sentence in different words. A clincher sentence or concluding sentence clinches the point made in the paragraph. It summarizes the paragraph.

Organizing Your Paragraph
37
The Body Paragraph Questions to ask myself
Do I have a strong topic sentence? Do I have textual evidence? Does my paragraph flow? Did I properly introduce my quote? Do I adequately explain and discuss my quote? Do I have a concluding sentence? Is my paragraph substantial (10-12 sent)
38
Please avoid: Death by PLOT SUMMARY
39
The Conclusion This is the final chance to convince your reader of your Claim (Thesis Statement). Purpose of the conclusion: Summarize of your Claim in a way that is NOT redundant or a simple restatement of your Thesis Statement. Focus on the BIG PICTURE and do NOT introduce new details. Wrap up your argument. A good introduction should be at least 4-6 sentences.
40
Citations Rules Anything in “quotation marks” MUST have an accompanying parenthetical citation, otherwise it is considered plagiarism. Don’t interrupt a sentence to place a parenthetical citation, but put all citations at the END of the sentence. “Don’t put citations here” (126) but here (126). Citations include ONLY the page number of the textbook. “Out damned spot” (275). (p. 275), (Scene 3, line 35). Quoting one of the articles we read requires a “Works Cited” page and the in-text parenthetical citation will look like this… “My quote here” (Sweetwater 1). The placement of the period in the above citations is CRITICAL. Take note of it and do it correctly.
