Two Categories of Hearers
The Hearer & Doer vs. The Hearer Only The Have vs. The Have Not The Protected vs. The Destroyed The Wise vs. The Foolish Which One Are You? We could approach the answer from an either/or proposition relative to the totality of our lives. Most of us like to think of it from the standpoint of “for the most part.” In other words, for the most part I am wise, that is, I hear and do. We could also apply the teaching to the individual commands. On one command we can be wise and on another we are foolish.
10
Life Building Our lives are like houses A foundation is laid Walls go up to separate us from the world A roof shields us from the weather Our life is like a house. We fill our lives with treasures of time and space that reveal our personality Our foundation is what we root our lives in
11
Life Building Our lives are like houses A house built on a rock: It is harder to build on the rock It is a stronger foundation It is above the storms of life It is easier to forgive others when we can realize we need forgiveness, often for sins far worse than others
12
Life Building Our lives are like houses A house built on a rock: A house build on sand: Is easy to build Has no firm foundation Is at the level of the storms of life It is easier to forgive others when we can realize we need forgiveness, often for sins far worse than others
13
Life Building No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it. 1 Corinthians 10:13 Our lives are like houses A house built on a rock A house build on sand All people will face (the same) storms This parable is about life now It is easier to forgive others when we can realize we need forgiveness, often for sins far worse than others

Hearing Demands Action
Men are wise/foolish before the word The Word revealed our natures It is a mirror of Truth Are you wise or are you foolish? We all want to be wise, but true wisdom is based in actions and deeds
15
Hearing Demands Action
Men are wise/foolish before the word The Word revealed our natures What makes one wise? Fear of the Lord – Proverbs 1:5-7 Looking to what is coming Realization of the importance of truth Pr 1:5 A wise man will hear and increase in learning, And a man of understanding will acquire wise counsel, 6 To understand a proverb and a figure, The words of the wise and their riddles. 7 ¶ The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; Fools despise wisdom and instruction. Truth is absolute; it does not care if I believe it or not
16
Hearing Demands Action
Men are wise/foolish before the word The Word revealed our natures What makes one wise? What makes one foolish? Choosing the easy path – Proverbs 14:16 Not considering the future Pr 14:16 ¶ A wise man is cautious and turns away from evil, But a fool is arrogant and careless.
17
The Storms of Life Storms come in different ways Life itself Decisions we make The evil works of men Life has lots of storms
18
The Storms of Life Storms come in different ways It is too late to build in the storm Spiritual life must precede the storm Life has lots of storms
19
If You Want To Be Wise: Be doers of the Law, not hearers only
But He said, "On the contrary, blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it.“ Luke 11:28 Life has lots of storms
20
If You Want To Be Wise: Be doers of the Law, not hearers only
for it is not the hearers of the Law who are just before God, but the doers of the Law will be justified. Romans 2:13 Life has lots of storms
21
If You Want To Be Wise: Be doers of the Law, not hearers only
But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his natural face in a mirror; for once he has looked at himself and gone away, he has immediately forgotten what kind of person he was. But one who looks intently at the perfect law, the law of liberty, and abides by it, not having become a forgetful hearer but an effectual doer, this man will be blessed in what he does. James 1:22-25 If You Want To Be Wise: Be doers of the Law, not hearers only Life has lots of storms
22
If You Want To Be Wise: Be doers of the Law, not hearers only Be mindful of what is in store in life Remember also your Creator in the days of your youth, before the evil days come and the years draw near when you will say, "I have no delight in them“ Ecclesiastes 12:1 Life has lots of storms
23
If You Want To Be Wise: Be doers of the Law, not hearers only Be mindful of what is in store in life "Behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to render to every man according to what he has done” Revelation 22:12 Life has lots of storms
24
Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. Let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we will reap if we do not grow weary. Galatians 6:7-9 If You Want To Be Wise: Be doers of the Law, not hearers only Be mindful of what is in store in life Understand that being patient has rewards Life has lots of storms
25
"If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them”
If You Want To Be Wise: Be doers of the Law, not hearers only Be mindful of what is in store in life Understand that being patient has rewards There are rewards here AND later "If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them” John 13:17 Life has lots of storms

To Build On The Rock Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." And Jesus said to him, "Blessed are you, Simon Barjona, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it” Matthew 16:16-18
28
To Build On The Rock How do you build your life on Jesus as the Christ? 1. By believing it – 1 John 3:23 2. By confessing it – Acts 8:37 3. By forsaking all else for it – Luke 13:5 4. By being baptized into it – Romans 6:3 5. By living it – Romans 6:11
