Thorough work plan Separate job into simple steps Identify hazards associated with job Develop solutions to control hazards You have an important role to play

4 WHAT’S THE DANGER To you, some hazards might be obvious
But you’ve seen situations others haven’t A co-worker might learn the hazard the hard way

5 EXAMPLE Man died from injuries sustained falling off a ladder
No safety feet on ladder Co-worker stabilized the ladder Ladder started to slide Fell to the icy surface below JHA might have identified hazard

6 WHAT’S INVOLVED Conduct a JHA Take a good look at each individual step
Who does what When they do it Include all aspects of: Gathering Production Assembly Packaging Preparing

7 WHAT’S INVOLVED No step in the process is too small
One employee performs the task JHA team members observe and note actions Consider every potential hazard of each step How to eliminate it

8 WHAT’S INVOLVED You could ask: Is a guard needed?
Where is the power source? Are other employees in the path of danger? Is PPE needed? What type? Training?

9 Your input into safety issues is essential.
Final Word Your input into safety issues is essential. If you’re aware of situations where other workers have had close calls or been injured as a result of hazards they weren’t aware of, ask your supervisor about the possibility of participating in a JHA.
