1 Title of notes: Intro to rocks and minerals
Pg. 2 & 3 RS Use quartz and granite

2 Bell work week 20 Pick a science word and write the definition.
Chapter 3 Goal for lesson: write on self assessment I can describe the difference between rocks and minerals.

3 I’ll know I’ve got it when…
Learning target I can describe the differences between rocks and minerals. Today I am… analyzing the differences between rocks and a minerals. So that I’ll be able to… understand that they are different objects with different features. I’ll know I’ve got it when… I can describe more than one difference between rocks and minerals.

4 Ex. Quartz (mineral) is SiO2
Rock vs. mineral All rocks are made of one or more minerals, but minerals are not made of rocks. A mineral has a specific composition, while the composition of a rock can change through time. Ex. Quartz (mineral) is SiO2 Quartz is a compound of one part silicon and two parts of oxygen, silicon dioxide, SiO2

5 The amethyst has traces of iron which give it the purple color
The amethyst has traces of iron which give it the purple color. The orange quartz also has traces of iron but has been exposed to more intense heat. All examples of quartz!

6 Elements are atoms, they are pure substances that cannot be broken down into simpler substances.
The earth’s crust is made up of elements, some very common and others very rare. These elements are what make up minerals. Different elements have different properties. You wouldn’t fill a balloon with iron, and you wouldn’t try to build a bridge out of helium. Atoms are the smallest part of the element and they have all the same characteristics.

7 Minerals Minerals are a collection of one or more elements that are arranged neatly together in a crystal structure.

8 Crystals - A crystal is an organized grouping of atoms
Crystals - A crystal is an organized grouping of atoms. Each crystal has different properties and shapes. Quartz Amethyst

9 What is a mineral? Ask yourself the four questions:
Is it a solid? Is it formed in nature? Does it have a crystal structure? Is it non-living material?

10 What is crystalline? To be crystalline means that the atoms within the solid are arranged in a geometric pattern that is unique to that mineral. Altering that structure in any way results in the creation of a new mineral. Graphite: Dense layers of carbon

11 ROCK MINERALS ATOMS ELEMENTS

12 Sodium Chlorine Individual salt (halite) crystals have a cubic shape to them, which is mimicking the way that the individual elements are stacking together. We can tell how they are stacking together by looking at the shape of the salt crystals. Marshmallow model? Halite is formed when the salt in ocean, likes, or rivers is evaporated out and left in deposits. These deposits can be left on beaches or the edges of the lakes and rivers. Halite is also found in a rock called Rock Salt. Rock Salt is 95-99% halite with impurities of other minerals and organic compounds.

13 Rocks are composed of one or more minerals and minerals are composed of one or more elements.

14 Rocks are studied based on two important criteria.
COMPOSITION WHAT IT IS MADE UP OF TEXTURE WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE

15 Rocks are classified into 3 categories.
Igneous Rock Sedimentary Rock Metamorphic Rock

16 Quick check With your table group:
Muddiest point – Come up with one or two things that you found difficult to understand.
