By: Emma Collins, Donny Liang, Erin Mullen, and Taite Winter

2 Problem Statement & Hypothesis
The goal of this project is to use wearable technology such as the Apple watches to track sleep activity. At the moment, it is unknown if the Apple watches are as accurate and reliable as other wearable technologies. HYPOTHESIS The Apple watches are not as accurate as other wearable technologies, but since the watches have customizable apps, they could be better at measuring other aspects. What do you mean by other aspects?

3 Relation to Gerontechnology
Older adults experience changes in sleep patterns Prevalence of sleep disorders increases with age According to NSF- “44% of older persons experience one or more of the nighttime symptoms of insomnia at least a few nights per week or more.” Could help with diagnosis and treatment of: Insomnia Sleep Apnea Restless Leg Syndrome Gastric Reflux Disease Depression Other psychological or physical conditions -Older adults recommended 7-8 hours of sleep -experience changes in sleep patterns-- less time in the deep REM sleep, specficially in stage IV of the sleep cycle -adults who were short sleepers (less than 7 hours per 24-hour period) were more likely to report 10 chronic health conditions compared to those who got enough sleep (7 or more hours per 24-hour period) (see Tabl

4 Proposed methods Collect data from participants wearing Apple watch w/apps and Actigraph while sleeping Using data from other apps and actigraphs, compare with AL app data to determine accuracy & differences Sadeh sleep algorithm What did other apps measure How did they determine a ‘grade’ for sleep? Assuming actigraph is most accurate/precise, how can we make AL app closer to this data? Were the other apps better? Determine if errors/drops in accuracy relate to physical device or app Brainstorm ideas to improve app or device based on data analysis

5 Roles and Goals Roles: There isn’t a clearly defined individual role for the each of us. Rather, we work together collectively on the entirety of the project. Goals: Keep collecting data and record sleep information Gather participants for more extensive data collection Assist with data collection and participant trials Research the algorithms used by the Apps on the Apple Watch, if we can find out what Compare and contrast between different sleep activity monitoring apps Compare how efficient the Apple Watch is to the Actigraph at sleep activity monitoring Interpret data results and create poster board
