Today we are going to take a quick test. This test is not for a grade but to find out what you know. So I am going to show you a slide with an image of a piece of art. There will be some questions on this slide. I will read those questions aloud and give you a couple of minutes to answer the questions. Once everyone turns in their answers, I will introduce our new challenge. We will take this exact same test again at the end of this unit of study.

Today we are going to look at the artwork of Alicia Merrett.

4. Just looking at this peace can someone share with the class what you see? (Ask a couple of students for input) Good, thank you. Merrett is an Art Quilt maker. Who uses maps to help her design her quilts.

5. “A few years ago I discovered the potential of maps and aerial views as sources for textile work, and since then I have been concentrating on interpreting those.  I believe maps are an ancient and important part of mankind’s need to interpret and understand the world.”

6. Abstract art portrays what an artist feels and thinks, rather than what he or she sees. An abstract artist uses colors and shapes to express their emotions and ideas.
