1 Grab a new focus lesson from the front desk.
Complete the definition column. CAN YOU DO THIS WITHOUT USING A TEXT BOOK? CHALLENGE YOURSELF! 5min INDEPENDENT WORK: VOLUME LEVEL 0

2 Daily Objective SWBAT demonstrate mastery on Properties of Water.
How does the structure of water molecules allow for properties which sustain life? SWBAT Identify the structure and function of Carbohydrates and Lipids. Why do living organisms need these structures to survive?

3 Were you absent? Check the calendar
What are we doing? Last class Quiz 2: CHARGER-D How did we do as a class? Notes: Properties of Water (Page 19) Lab: Prop H2O (Page 18) I.P. Prop H2O (Page 21 H.L.) Vocab Quiz This class Reflect on Page 21 Diagram Page 20 Quiz 3: Prop H2O Notes Macromolecules Were you absent? Check the calendar

4 Independent practice: Home Learning
Open up to Page 21 of your interactive Journal.

5 Paste the handout onto page 21
For our reflection you will diagram your answers to questions 1-4 on page 20. Use color and discuss with your group. 10 min

6 Quiz time: Properties of water
Follow normal quiz procedures Eyes on your own paper You have 10 minutes

7 Grade our quizzes Trade quiz papers with someone in your group
Pick a grading tool from your group’s work bin Sign your name at the bottom Listen for the correct answers X if they are wrong Check if they are right

8 Track and Glue Our Quizzes
How did you do? Record your grade next to page 23 in your table of contents 5/5= 100% 4/5= 80% 3/5= 60% 2/5= 40% 1/5= 20% Get ready for remediation or enrichment

9 Corrections or Enrichment What do we put on page 22? GREAT question!!!
Did you originally score less than an 80% Did you originally score 80% or HIGHER? Make corrections! REMEMBER this is our opportunity to learn from our mistakes How do you earn credit? SRE S: What is the correct answer? WRITE IT OUT R: Why is it CORRECT? E: Where in your notebook did you find support/ evidence that this is correct? (Page #) RAFT Role: An organism on Earth You choose Audience: Water Format: Love Letter Topic: Why your unique properties allow life to exist on Earth. This can be a paragraph. Be creative and make it fun!

10 In the top margin of Page 24
List five things you’ve eaten this week Circle the food items you think are considered proteins. Underline the foods you think are sugars. Highlight the foods you think are fats. 3 min

11 How does your diet compare?
Take a minute to read the 10 Tips Handout from the USDA. (5 min) Discuss your choices with your table mates and determine how you could alter your diet to make better choices OR keep your choices that were good! In 3-5 sentences, explain HOW your choices impacted your health. Why do you think this impacted your health?

12 DESIGN AN EXPERIMENT! BE CREATIVE
Complete the “Answer” Column. This column will answer the questions to the left. Stuck on observation? How about this example: Some diapers absorb more liquid than others 10 min DESIGN AN EXPERIMENT! BE CREATIVE

13 Daily Objective SWBAT Identify the structure and function of the carbon based molecules that build life. Why do living organisms need these structures to survive? How do monomers come together to form polymers? How do we identify these molecules using molecular diagrams?

15 USDA “Ten 10 for Teens” The recommendations focused around low fat, low sugar, whole grain and lean protein diets. Why might there have been different tips for males vs females? ACTIVATE PRIOR KNOWLEDGE DISCUSS AT TABLE

16 Let’s Discuss Sugars Fats Proteins
In this class we call sugars, CARBOHYDRATES Fats In this class we call fats, LIPIDS Proteins In this class we call proteins, PROTEINS You’re welcome These are three of the carbon-based molecules we consider to be the building blocks of life.

17 What’s a Carbon Based Molecule (Put this on the lines of Page 24)
Carbon is the BEST LEGO IN THE BOX. It can bond with up to four other elements, making it a versatile atom! = =

18 There are 4 Carbon based molecules that build life
We’ve introduced three of them, let’s take notes and learn about the fourth.

19 Setting Up for Notes on Page 25
Divide your page into a top half and a bottom half Top Half Frayer Model Construction: COPY THE FOLLOWING ONTO TOP HALF Function Structure Monomer/Polymer Examples

20 Let’s learn from TV Some jokes on television stem from academic knowledge. Smart people laugh more, so let’s laugh!

21 Bottom Half of Page 25 LIPID
Bottom Half Frayer Model Construction: COPY THE FOLLOWING ONTO BOTTOM HALF Structure Function LIPID Monomer/Polymer Examples

22 Focus Lesson: Scientific Method “Taking it to the Next Level” Column
Graph your lab design. You can make up your data, but be sure to have your variables on the correct axis. Answer the question below your graph. 10 min

23 Daily Objective SWBAT Identify the structure and function of the carbon based molecules that build life. Why do living organisms need these structures to survive? How do monomers come together to form polymers? How do we identify these molecules using molecular diagrams?

25 Handout to staple over Page 24
Structure Function Monomer/Polymer Examples Protein Handout to staple over Page 24 I modeled this graphic organizer strategy for carbohydrates and lipids- are you up for the CHALLENGE??? As a table group, use the text book to create your Frayer model for Proteins and Nucleic Acids. REMEMBER to use color and diagram when necessary! These are YOUR notes We will fill in gaps as a class. Use Pages 47-48 Structure Function Monomer/Polymer Examples Nucleic Acids

26 Group Practice: Page 26 Let’s Make Lunch!
As a table group you will use the molecular diagrams in your “lunch bag” to create a healthy plate, with all of the macromolecules your body needs to function! Think back to the “Top Ten Tips” article Materials Needed: Notes from Pages (IF NEEDED) Glue Sticks Colored Pencils Page 26 Volume Level: 2 (LOW VOLUME)

27 Group Practice: Page 26 Let’s Make Lunch!
Select at least one of each carbon based molecule that need to be in a balanced healthy diet. Create a color key to indicate which molecule is which You can put this key on the back of your plate Be sure to color each molecule according to your key Glue your colored macromolecules to your group plate. Once you have created your healthy plate each member of the table group will answer the following questions on Page 26. Work together! How did you identify each macromolecule based on it’s structure? (Think elements, shape, ect…) Is your plate comprised of monomers or polymers? EXPLAIN Why is each of the items on your plate required for a healthy diet? Group Practice: Page 26 Let’s Make Lunch!

28 I.P. Macromolecules Page 27
Start this work in class, anything that you do not complete will be assigned as HOME LEARNING. Quiz 4 will be given NEXT class. BE READY! 

29 Vocabulary List #2 It is your responsibility to study the vocabulary introduced in class. To check on your progress we will take vocabulary quizzes. How should you study? You do not need to have a vocabulary list in your notebook. These words are defined in your notes. Instead, MAKE FLASH CARDS! Quiz each other on these words.
