1 HUMAN IMPACT ON ECOSYSTEMS
Topic 5 Day 2 HUMAN IMPACT ON ECOSYSTEMS

2 Date: 09/15/16 Topic: Human Impact Learning Target: Predict how the actions of humans may impact environmental

3 Humans and Sustainability
Environmental Problems, Their Causes and Sustainability

4 Bell Ringer: Silent, independent work
Which of the following would lower the carrying capacity of the hare population? an increase of food a decrease of lynx an increase of lynx a decrease of environmental disturbances 2. Explain why you chose your answer in #1 add a biodiversity review question to connect back to Ecology day 1

5 Think About It Over an average lifetime, each American will…
Through technology, humans now have the power to change the local and global systems on which all living things depend. What effect are humans having on the global climate? What can you do to reduce your environmental impact? Over an average lifetime, each American will… burn 31,350 gallons of gasoline. read 5,054 newspapers equaling 43 trees. discard 64 tons of garbage use 1.8 million gallons of water To the Teacher; Determine your students’ prior knowledge by asking them to list different kinds of pollution. Ask them to provide examples of pollution in their local community and areas they have visited. Accept all reasonable answers. Ask them to rate their examples from the most to least critical Have students discuss examples of how an individual can contribute to solving an environmental problem. Accept all reasonable answers.

6 What are we learning today?
Objectives Benchmarks Predict how the actions of humans may impact environmental systems and/or affect sustainability Evaluate possible environmental impacts resulting from the use of renewable and/or nonrenewable resources SC.912.L Predict the impact of individuals on environmental systems and examine how human lifestyles affect sustainability. AA SC.912.L Evaluate the costs and benefits of renewable and nonrenewable resources, such as water, energy, fossil fuels, wildlife, and forests.

7 -15 minutes -Use your Power Notes worksheet
Note Taking -15 minutes -Use your Power Notes worksheet

8 What are some causes of environmental problems?
Rapid population growth Unsustainable resource use Poverty Not including the environmental costs of economic goods and services in their market prices Trying to manage and simplify nature with too little knowledge about how it works To the Teacher:

9 Where do pollutants come from and what are their effect?
Pollutants are chemicals that cause harm to people or other organisms. Natural (volcanic eruptions) Anthropogenic (burning fossil fuels) Pollutant have three types of unwanted effects Disrupt or degrade life-support systems Damage wildlife, human health, and property Nuisance Pollution does not respect boundaries. Point sources of pollution are single, identifiable sources. Nonpoint sources of pollution are dispersed and difficult to identify.

10 What are the key environmental problems?
Major Environmental Problems Air Pollution Biodiversity Depletion Water Pollution Waste Production Food Supply Problems

11 What is the essential question?
How do you feel when you read that… the average American consumes about 35 times more resources than the average Indian citizen human activities lead to the premature extinction of at least 10 species per day Do you feel skeptical, indifferent, sad, helpless , guilty, concerned, outrage, hopeless, or not want to think about it? Which of these feelings help perpetuate such problems, and which can alleviate them? Explain your answer.

12 Air Pollution Global climate change Stratospheric ozone depletion
Urban air pollution Acid deposition Outdoor and indoor pollutants Noise

13 Biodiversity Depletion
Caused by….Habitat destruction 42% of the planet's entire terrestrial net primary productivity 50% of all freshwater Caused by..Habitat degradation Causes… Species Extinction Extinction rate is up to 30,000 species per year. That's three per hour!!! Teacher should ask a biodiversity recall question -

14 Water Pollution Sediment Nutrient overload Toxic chemicals
Pick 3 examples to write: Sediment Nutrient overload Toxic chemicals Infectious agents Oxygen depletion Pesticides Oil spills Excess heat

15 Waste Production Write these examples: Solid waste Hazardous waste
Landfills

16 Food Supply Problems Pick 3 examples to write: Overgrazing
Wetland loss and degradation Overfishing Coastal pollution Soil erosion Soil salinization Water shortages Groundwater depletion Poor nutrition

17 Group Work -rotate between 4 stations with your groups
-We will rotate every 7 minutes -prepare to share whole group -Answer Questions in your notebook

18 Independent Practice -10 minutes, DUE IN CLASS
-write your name and class period at the top of the page -Work silently, independently and with URGENCY

19 -3 multiple choice questions -1 long answer; Include listed vocab
Exit Ticket -3 multiple choice questions -1 long answer; Include listed vocab

20 Homework DUE 09/19 1. Flip the Classroom HW Found at:
2. Class Project: Create flyers to encourage others to conserve resources. Have students post the flyers around the school
