What is the monomer for protein? What do you eat to obtain protein?
Catalyst What is the monomer for protein? What do you eat to obtain protein?

Today… Enzymes notes Review concepts & begin Love Letter <3
3
Enzymes Are proteins Speed up reactions Lower activation energy
Are not used up in a reaction Either break or build compounds
4
Basic Structure Active site – where the substrate attaches Substrate – the molecule the enzyme will change
5
Enzyme inhibition Allosteric Inhibition
- The shape of the active site is changed and the substrate does not fit
6
Competitive inhibition
Enzyme Inhibition Competitive inhibition Another molecule blocks the active site
7
Catalase – enzyme that speeds up decomposition of hydrogen peroxide
How would you measure the rate of this reaction? You could measure either the amount of reactant (hydrogen peroxide) or how much product (oxygen or water) is made. In this case if you seal the container any oxygen gas released can be measured for easy calculations. Catalase – enzyme that speeds up decomposition of hydrogen peroxide
8
pH, temperature & concentration
The rate of reaction will increase until all enzymes are used. Enzyme Denatures (loses its shape and no longer functions) Enzyme Denatures (loses its shape and no longer functions)

Love letter example… Dear Sammy Substrate, My name is Emilia the enzyme. I think you are gorgeous! I am going to tell you a little bit about myself so that maybe you will become interested in attaching to my active site. I am a FUN enzyme! I am a fast worker because as an enzyme I increase the speed of reactions. I am also down to earth: I lower the activation energy that it takes to get chemical reactions going. Sammy Substrate, I hope you will be the reactant for my chemical romance. The products we could make together would be magnificent. You would be the perfect fit for me. Like a lock-and-key, we’re perfect for each other and no one else. Just remember that you and I can only get together under very specific circumstances. It has to be the right time, we can’t rush. I need the right pH and the right temperature before I would be willing to have you join my active site. It can’t be too cold, but it can’t be too hot on the day you decide to get with me. And don’t be too acidic or basic! If you are either one of those, I would lose my shape and you couldn’t attach to me =( So pick the right pH and temperature! - Emilia the Enzyme.
11
Catalyst What would you expect to happen to enzyme rate if you raised the temperature by 20*C? I will model enzyme reactions.
12
Read through the procedure
What does this reaction look like? What different scenarios are you testing?
14
Catalyst 09.15.16 What would be the ideal conditions for this enzyme?
Where do you think this enzyme is found?
