D3 – Bellringer Take a look at the following issues; note that you will be writing about one of these: Gun Control Should More Gun Control Laws Be Enacted? (EXAMPLE Vid) Border Security / Immigration What ought to be done regarding illegal immigration? Should we build a wall, like Trump wants, or is there another solution? Social Media Are Social Networking Sites Good for Our Society? Next, find someone else in the class (after just 10 minutes of research), and share your opinion on the issue, including exploring other opinions. Share both of your views respectfully. Then we’ll share with the class!

Speech & Debate: Next, let’s learn a bit more about rhetoric and good writing. Grab your textbook, and read Ch. 1, pp 6-17. Answer the following questions as you read: Why is the “one sitting” paper a bad idea? Explain (p. 6) Describe what “self-regulating strategies” are (pp 7-8) Give some examples of some, as well as some that you personally use in writing or meeting other goals (pp 7-8) What do “expert writers” know (pp 8-9) What are conventions? (p 10) Define the six (6) conventions you ought to know, and give an example of each (pp 10-13) Pick 1 question from each of the Appendix Sections, and write it down, & then answer it, regarding your chosen topic (e.g. Rhetorical Knowledge, Self-Assessment, Writing Strategies, Self-regulating Strategies, Reflection) Class Discussion

Appendix & Research The Chapter One Appendix is full of great stuff that you all can utilize to become better writers (and by extension debaters). I recommend you take the cheat sheet I made for you and utilize it in this and any other classes you may write in. Research! In order to give you some practice in writing and persuasion, over the next few weeks you’ll be taking one of those three controversial questions I asked at the beginning of class (Gun Control, Marijuana, Social Media, etc.) and arguing for or against a position. You’ll be doing this as a minimum 5- paragraph persuasive essay. See the assignment for more details. We will have the draft due by D5, and the final by D7. I recommend spending today working on research, and main ideas. Good luck!

Final 15: Logical Fallacy of the Day:
For today, I thought we’d focus on the Strawman Fallacy Here’s a specific one: The Strawman Fallacy A Straw Man argument attacks something by attacking a helpless caricature of that something: it often distorts the original by exaggeration. Example: – The movement to allow prayer in public school classrooms is a major threat to our freedom.
