Presentation on theme: "Monday, 1/7/ Agenda Warm Up pg. 74 Warm-Up"— Presentation transcript:

1 Monday, 1/7/ Agenda Warm Up pg. 74 Warm-Up Introduction to Engineering Design Process (EDP) Tallest Spaghetti Tower Challenge List and give a brief description of the Steps to the Scientific Method.

2 On pg 74 State the problem in the form of a question, based on an observation Will TFP make Roses “bud” faster? Research the problem What is actually in TFP? What do plants need to grow? Form a hypothesis Tropical Fruit Punch makes Roses “bud” fast.

3 Experiment Test my hypothesis

4 Collect and organize data
Use data tables Write notes for each day Write ONLY OBSERVATIONS Analyze the data Put the data in Graphic form (use graphs) Analyze trends Form an conclusion and make recommendations Was the hypothesis correct? What’s next?

5 Monday, 1/7/19Tower Challenge pg 75
Goal: Make the tallest structure possible Criteria: Free standing structure Constraints: Use the Big marshmallow, as a whole Materials are limited to: 1 piece of masking tape (about 6 inches) 20 pieces of spaghetti 4 little marshmallows 1 big marshmallow Write a paragraph: What worked, what didn’t, how can you make it better, etc.

6 Debrief Engineering Design Process (EDP)
Tuesday, 1/8/ Agenda Warm-Up Debrief Engineering Design Process (EDP) Notes provided, pg 76 Tallest Spaghetti Tower Challenge written paragraph

Tuesday, 1/8/19 Warm Up Direction: Using your periodic table, copy and complete the chart below. Element Symbol # of Electrons # of Valence Electrons # of Electrons lost/gained Oxidation Number Chlorine Cl 17 7 Gain 1 - 1 Potassium K 19 1 Lose 1 + 1 Magnesium Mg 12 2 Lose 2 + 2 Fluorine F 9

8 Engineering pg 76 Definition
branch of science and technology concerned with the design, building, and use of engines, machines, structures, or any item that makes society better Or Using science and math to solve a problem Engineering Design Process

9 Engineering Design Process
Ask: Identify the needs and constraints Research: The problem Imagine: Design possible solutions Communicate: Your solution Improve: Redesign and retest as needed Plan: Select a promising solution Create: Build a prototype Test: And evaluate the prototype

13 Debrief Maglev Engineering Design Process Challenge Review EDP Notes
Friday, 1/11/ Agenda Warm-Up Debrief Maglev Engineering Design Process Challenge Review EDP Notes New Challenge: Rescue the dog from the well

14 Friday January 11, 2019 Warm Up Draw and label a Bohr Model for each of the following atoms: H He Li

15 Dog in a Well

16 Page 82 The Need: Rescue the dog from the well Background Information: You have to put information here that is important to you. Constraints: the dog is blind in 1 eye and has a broken leg. You can only use the materials provided, you only have a short amount of time to save the dog (the end of class) Materials: - 1 Meter stick meters of string - ½ meter of masking tape paper clips - 2 popsicle sticks
