Fecal Calprotectin and Lactoferrin
Indicators of inflammatory bowl disease Fecal Calprotectin and Lactoferrin P000252 Introduction The calprotectin (calcium-binding protein) and the lactoferrin (iron binding glycoprotein) are produced primarily by neutrophils. Activation of the intestinal immune system result in activation of neutrophils, which leads to release of both proteins, result in excretion in the feces. Clinical Information The main usage of the calprotectin is for distinguishing inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), when used in conjunction with other diagnostic modalities, including imaging, endoscopy, and histopathology. Other causes of abnormal calprotectin except IBD Infections (Bacterial and viral gastroenteritis) Malignancies Drugs (NSAID, proton pump inhibitors) Other GI disease (GERD, cystic fibrosis, LC…) Other (Food allergy, Young age < 5 years) Suspicious IBD Fecal calprotectin or lactoferrin + - Endoscopy - + Evaluation for other etiologies IBD treatment Test information Test Name Test Code Price Specimen Method TAT CALPROTECTIN & LACTOFERRIN, FECES P000252 RS.2,520 FECES ICT 5 hrs.
