2 What are the Marie Skłodowska Curie Actions?
A European Union funded programme for structuring researcher training, mobility and career development Guiding principles: Career development Bottom-up approach Mobility Enhanced business-academia collaboration and staff exchange Excellent employment and working conditions

3 Who, what and where? Who: All levels of research experience from PhD researcher upwards – there are actions for different levels of experience. What: All areas of research are supported: bottom-up approach Where: Anywhere: any research performing organisation, public or private worldwide - there are actions for European and international mobility.

4 Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions
Innovative Training Networks ITN early-stage researchers (< 4 years) Doctoral and initial training: European Training Networks, European Industrial Doctorates, European Joint Doctorates Individual Fellowships IF experienced researchers (> 4 years) Support for experienced researchers to undertake international and inter-sector mobility, incl. career restart and reintegration Research and Innovation Staff Exchange RISE International and inter-sector cooperation through the exchange of staff Co-funding of programmes COFUND Co-funding of regional, national and international programmes: doctoral programmes (ESR) fellowship programmes (ER)

5 MSCA - Individual Fellowships
A personal fellowship to support a period of mobility For Experienced Researchers Post-PhD or equivalent No upper age or experience limit Fully-funded fellowships Salary, research costs etc. Academic or non-academic host In possession of a doctoral degree or at least 4 years of res. experience * ("post-doc") *counted from the time when is entitled to embark on a doctoral degree

18 Research and Innovation
Staff Exchange - MSCA RISE

19 MSCA - RISE Promoting transfer of knowledge between countries and sectors Research programme executed by: Exchange of “staff” around the consortium (Duration 1 month to 1 year) Networking Activities Collaborate with any sector and any country worldwide No Mobility Rule Secondments for the same staff member can be split in several stays. But the total of all splits for the same staff member cannot be less than 1 month or more that 12 months, over the full duration of the project. The travelling days are included in the secondment duration. There is no minimum size explicitly defined for a project, but since “Impact” is one of the 3 award criteria, projects selected for funding are expected to have a substantial impact. There are also no restrictions as regards the direction or balance of the secondments within the project. The important is that the secondments are relevant for the execution of the proposed project. No limitations to the budget per country either. “Staff” = research students, postdocs, PIs, technical and managerial staff.

20 RISE Requirements Project duration 48 months Minimum consortium 3 participants in 3 countries 2 academic participants plus 1 non-academic (or vice versa) 2 European participants plus 1 non-European participant Secondments: “Staff” must be active at their host for 6 months before secondment Must be reintegrated after secondment (no duration or mechanism specified) All secondments within Europe must be international & intersectoral Secondments between Europe and outside can be international only Secondments between most European countries and non-European countries are eligible for funding: exception is high-income countries

RISE RISE Call Due to Open in December 2018 Apply at Horizon 2020 Participant Portal:

22 Reasons to get involved
Build Links with Research Groups and Industry Worldwide Increase number of research students & staff Attracting Leading & Up-and-Coming Researchers Fund a Sabbatical Abroad (up-skill for ERC)

23 Design your research project in time
Hints for a successful proposal Look for a network or host institute and supervisor (you can only submit one application per call) Design your research project in time Consider appropriate secondment options Think about the proposal in the context of the Evaluation Criteria (see Guide for Applicants for the current calls and examples provided Proposal should make the evaluators' "life" easier (consistent, well-written, "built" around the award criteria The evaluators may not all be world experts in exactly the area of your proposal – avoid using very specific jargon and acronyms

24 Hints for a successful proposal
Provide the evaluators with evidence for your claims, but avoid external resources (links to websites etc.) Graphics and charts can be very helpful, but don’t overdo it! Make sure they are readable in black & white. Explain the contribution that your project is expected to make. Your project should be innovative and original. Demonstrate the expertise of the host institutions as well as the expertise of the supervisor/research staff in the field of research you want to explore. Describe how this project will contribute to development of the researchers career and to network enhancement Find a successful proposal (Google also helps–“Part B”)
