Nano-Technology A Tiny Robotic Hand Group # 7 February 13, 2007
2
Nano-technology A field of applied science and technology covering a field of things on a smaller scale than one micrometer.
3
Nano-technology The genesis for nano-technology has its roots in the late 19th century. By last year it was predicted that over $400 million would be invested in nano-technology.
4
Nano-Technology There are two main approaches with nano-technology:
Botton-up Top-down
5
Nano-technology Bottom-up
is where materials and devices are assembled using principles of molecular recognition
6
Nano-technology Top-down
where nano-objects are constructed from larger entities without atomic-level control.
7
Nano-technology Micro-hand
The hand is made up of tiny silicon fingers with polymer-balloon joints. It’s the world’s smallest hand. Measure at 1 mm when the fist is closed.
8
Nano-technology Micro-hand Benefits Can be used during microsurgery
Can be used during minimally invasive surgeries Allows surgeons to have more dexterity
9
Neno-technology Robotics
The artificial or virtual agent the allows the hand perform tedious functions
10
Nano-technology Pneumatic Operations
Micro hand is controlled by pneumatic operations instead of electrical operations Allows the hand to operate in wet and dry environments
11
Nano-technology Example of the delicate work the micro hand performs
