9 Last Will of Peter and Paul
2 Timothy Last Will of Peter and Paul Introduction – studying with the woman who wondered why God was not answering her prayers. When I asked her how she was sure God was even listening to her, she was truly offended. But that ought to be our first question – Is God listening?

10 Inspiration of Scriptures
Matthew Mark Luke John Paul James Peter Jude ? Romans 1 Peter Hebrews Acts 1 John 1&2 Corinthians 2 Peter 2 John Galatians 3 John Ephesians Revelation Philippians Colossians 1&2 Thessalonians 1&2 Timothy Titus Philemon Ephesians 4:11 states that When Jesus ascended, He gave us Apostles and Prophets, who became the foundation of the church (Eph. 2:11) in that they, inspired by the Holy Spirit, gave us the Scriptures, the foundation of the church (1 tim. 3:15)

11 The Variety of Scripture
Life of Christ History Letters to Churches Letter to Christians Letters to People Prophecy Matthew Acts Romans 1 John 1&2 Timothy Revelation Mark 1&2 Corinthians Jude Titus Luke Galatians Hebrews Philemon John Ephesians James 3 John Philippians 1&2 Peter Colossians 1&2 Thessalonians 2 John Often people teach very simplistically on prayer. They state that God answers all prayers, but that sometimes it is yes, sometimes it is no, and sometimes it is put us off. However, this is not accurate, and creates some problems

12 The Variety of Scripture
One particular “type” of epistle: 2 Peter and 2 Timothy Last Will and Testaments Both written by apostles at the end of their lives Both express the exact same messages Often people teach very simplistically on prayer. They state that God answers all prayers, but that sometimes it is yes, sometimes it is no, and sometimes it is put us off. However, this is not accurate, and creates some problems

13 Two Apostolic Wills A Last Will and Testament: “A will or testament is a legal document by which a person, the testator, expresses their wishes as to how their property is to be distributed at death, and names one or more persons, the executor, to manage the estate until its final distribution” Throughout most of the world, disposal of an estate has been a matter of social custom. According to Plutarch, the written will was invented by Solon. Originally, it was a device intended solely for men who died without an heir. – Wikipedia

14 Two Apostolic Wills Peter and Paul are: 1. Expressing how they see the end of their lives 2. The fate of their spiritual “assets” Their estate’s “executor” 3. The bequeathment of a final prophecy Throughout most of the world, disposal of an estate has been a matter of social custom. According to Plutarch, the written will was invented by Solon. Originally, it was a device intended solely for men who died without an heir. – Wikipedia

15 1. The Last Message 2 Timothy 2 Peter

16 1. The Last Message 2 Timothy PAUL: 2 Peter PETER:

17 1. The Last Message 2 Timothy 2 Peter PAUL: In Rome? Acts 28:31 PETER:
In Rome? 1 Peter 5:13

18 1. The Last Message 2 Timothy 2 Peter PAUL:
“Only Luke is with me” (4:11) 2 Peter PETER: “as also our beloved brother Paul” (3:15) Peter wrote while Paul was still living, while (if they were both in Rome) Paul writes after Peter is deceased

19 1. The Last Message 2 Timothy 2 Peter PAUL: Soon to die:
For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come. (4:6) 2 Peter PETER: Soon to die knowing that the laying aside of my earthly dwelling is imminent, as also our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me. (1:14) Peter wrote while Paul was still living, while (if they were both in Rome) Paul writes after Peter is deceased

20 1. The Last Message 2 Timothy 2 Peter PAUL:
He (may have) expected to die serving the Lord “for I will show him how much he must suffer for My name's sake.“ Acts 9:16 2 Peter PETER: He had expected to die serving the Lord Now this He said, signifying by what kind of death he would glorify God John 21:19 Peter wrote while Paul was still living, while (if they were both in Rome) Paul writes after Peter is deceased

21 1. The Last Message Peter and Paul both wrote this facing death But they BOTH saw it with confidence They BOTH wanted US to be faithful Paul – 2 Tim. 1:12 Peter – 2 Pet. 1:10-15 2Ti 1:12 For this reason I also suffer these things, but I am not ashamed; for I know whom I have believed and I am convinced that He is able to guard what I have entrusted to Him until that day.

22 Their Confidence At the end of their lives there was no faltering Peter even makes a comment to that: For we did not follow cleverly devised tales when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of His majesty. 2 Peter 1:16

23 Our Confidence How do we know we aren’t being deceived? Because of the deaths of the messengers! Their death was the ultimate “witness” of truth There is no greater testimony available

25 Peter’s Gospel Message
Hear and Believe Acts 15:7 Confess Christ Matthew 16:16 Repent from Sin Acts 3:19 Be Baptized Acts 2:38 Paul’s Gospel Message Hear and Believe Romans 10:14 Confess Christ Romans 10:9 Repent from Sin 2 Corinthians 7:10 Be Baptized Acts 22:16 Peter wrote while Paul was still living, while (if they were both in Rome) Paul writes after Peter is deceased

26 Peter & Paul’s Preaching
Hear and believe Ephesians 1:13 Confess Christ Hebrews 3:1 Repent of sin 1 Corinthians 15:34 Be baptized Titus 3:5 Remain faithful James 1:12 2Ti 4:2 preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction. 3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, 4 and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths. 5 But you, be sober in all things, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.
