Was James breaking the law? Would ‘hands free’ have prevented the accident? In this case, mobile phone usage is prohibited by law. Can you think of any situations in which, although mobile phone use is legal, it’s not the ‘done thing’ to use a mobile phone?

In this lesson students are learning about:
reasons for restrictions on the use of mobile phones responsible/acceptable use of mobile phones

At the end of this lesson students will be able to:
explain restrictions (legal and other) on mobile phone use and why they are imposed give examples of acceptable and unacceptable behaviour in respect of mobile phone usage

Task: Work in pairs to complete a table in No Phones Allowed.doc listing places/situations where mobile phone use is prohibited, the reason for the ban and possible consequences of non-compliance. Task: Compare your lists and differentiate between ‘must not’ and ‘should not’ restrictions.

Acceptable use 5 mins Work in groups to discuss what constitutes acceptable/unacceptable behaviour. Make sure you consider activities such as ‘happy-slapping’, cyber-bullying and ‘sexting’.

Questions… 20 mins What do they have in common?
What is different? Why? What sanctions would they impose?

And finally How many of you have seen someone using a phone whilst driving? What have they learnt about responsible use? Do sanctions alone suffice? Savvy users are aware of the consequences and act responsibly.
