What is TONE?
When looking for tone, we usually are analyzing how an author’s word choice shows us how they feel about a subject.

6. As You Listen…
Use the tone words handout to jot down 5 words that describe Dr. King’s TONE while speaking.
Be sure to observe any changes in tone throughout the speech!

7. Write-Pair-Share
Is King’s tone positive, negative, or neutral? Find a word in the appropriate column that BEST describes his tone.
Has King’s tone changed? If so, where? Repeat the process for finding a tone word every time his tone changes.

8. Partner Work Read back over the text.
