The goal of the five-year $15 million Reimaging Residency grant program is to transform residency training to best address the workforce needs of our current and future health care system.

After conducting a survey and a search of the literature, the Council on Medical Education proposed a set of guiding principles as a basis for developing guidelines for the screening and assessment of senior/late career physicians.

10. AMA Profile enhancements under consideration
DATA Waiver
Qualified physicians may apply and be provided with a DATA waiver (colloquially known as a buprenorphine waiver) permitting them to prescribe buprenorphine products to combat opioid dependency.
DATA waivers are also available to physician assistants (PAs) and nurse practitioners (NPs).
Physician waivers come with patient limits of 30, 100, and 275 – a physician may only treat up to the designated patient limit at one time. PA and NP waivers come with a patient limit of 30.
