Accessing competency in aging physicians When a hospital closes Policy D , “Assuring safe and effective care for patients by senior/late career physicians” – identify and convene Physicians 65 and older represent approx. 26% of physicians in the US with 41% actively engaged in patient care Work group noted that very few hospitals have age specific guidelines and that there is evidence that the number of disciplinary actions increases at 65 and 70 After conducting a survey and a search of the literature, the Council on Medical Education proposed a set of guiding principles as a basis for developing guidelines for the screening and assessment of senior/late career physicians. 10 AMA Profile enhancements under consideration
DATA Waiver Qualified physicians may apply and be provided with a DATA waiver (colloquially known as a buprenorphine waiver) permitting them to prescribe buprenorphine products to combat opioid dependency. DATA waivers are also available to physician assistants (PAs) and nurse practitioners (NPs). Physician waivers come with patient limits of 30, 100, and 275 – a physician may only treat up to the designated patient limit at one time. PA and NP waivers come with a patient limit of 30.
