Photosynthesis
2
Seeds Purpose of Seeds... Seed Parts Produce a new plant Plumule
Radicle Cotyledon Seed Coat
3
Roots Purpose of Roots… Root Types Anchor Store Food Collect Water
Fibrous Taproot
4
Flower Purpose of Flower… Flower Parts To reproduce/make a seed
Pistil (stigma, style, ovary, ovule, egg) Stamen (anther, filament, pollen grain, sperm) Petals Sepals
5
Stem Purpose of Stem… Structures found in Stems…
Establish basic shape of plant Position leaves Structures found in Stems… Xylem transports water from roots to leaves Phloem transports nutrients from leaves to roots
6
Leaves Purpose of leaves… Leaf Layers PHOTOSYNTHESIS! Epidermis…
Outside layer of leaf Protects Waterproof Mesophyll… Middle of leaf Contains chloroplasts (where photosynthesis occurs)
7
Epidermis-Blue Guard Cells-Green Mesophyll-Red Xylem-Yellow Phloem-Orange
9
What is photosynthesis?
Process in which plants make their own food.
11
PLANTS.... NEED MAKE SUNLIGHT GLUCOSE (ENERGY) OXYGEN CARBON DIOXIDE
WATER MAKE GLUCOSE (ENERGY) OXYGEN
12
Photosynthesis Process
1. Light from the sun strikes the plant’s leaves. 2.The chlorophyll in the cells of the plant absorbs light from the sun
13
3. The sun’s energy splits the water(H2O) molecules into hydrogen (H) and oxygen (O).
14
4. Carbon dioxide (CO2) enters leaves through holes called stomates.
15
5. The hydrogen joins with the carbon dioxide to make glucose/food (sugar).
16
6. The sugar is carried to other parts of the plant.
7. The extra oxygen is released into the air and is what we need to breathe.
17
Photosynthesis Equation
Light + Carbon Dioxide (CO2) + Water (H2O) Glucose (C6H12O6) + Oxygen (O2)

Stomates Holes on the LOWER EPIDERMIS Lets in… Lets out…
Carbon Dioxide Lets out… Water Oxygen
23
Guard Cells Cells on either side of stomate (opening) that open and close the hole to allow materials in and out of leaf.
