1 chapter 5-1: integumentary system intro
Essential Question: Compare and contrast how the Principle of Complementarity (hint: location & function) is different between the types of integument . Learning Target Define integument. Identify the functions of the integumentary system. Identify the layers of the skin. Identify the components of the epidermis. Identify the components of the dermis. Explain what contributes to skin color. Define hypodermis. chapter 5-1: integumentary system intro

5 Overview: integumentary system
The integumentary system is made up of: skin, hair, nails and glands of the skin.

6 Don’t forget to chunk your notes!

7 Physiology: The Integumentary System (6)
Protection: chemical, physical, and mechanical barrier Body temperature regulation is accomplished by: Dilation (widening) of blood vessels- cooling Constriction (narrowing)- warming Increasing sweat gland secretions to cool the body Cutaneous sensation: nerves sense touch and pain

8 Physiology: The Integumentary System (6)
Metabolic functions: makes vitamin D Blood reservoir: Stores blood skin blood vessels store up to 5% of the body’s blood volume Excretion: removes limited amounts of nitrogenous wastes are eliminated in sweat

10 Anatomy: Skin (Integument)
Consists of 2 major regions + hypodermis: Epidermis: outermost superficial region Dermis: thicker region below epidermis Hypodermis: (superficial fascia) Technically not part of the skin but also helps protect the body

11 Don’t forget to chunk your notes!

12 Epidermis Composed of keratinized stratified squamous epithelium, consisting of four distinct cell types and four layers Outer portion of the skin is exposed to the external environment and functions in protection The outer layer is all dead tissue

13 4 types of Epidermis cells
Keratinocytes: produce the fibrous protein keratin Melanocytes: produce the brown pigment melanin Langerhans’ Cells: (white blood cells) that help activate the immune system Merkel Cells: function as touch receptors in association with sensory nerve endings

15 Dermis The dermis is the 2nd major skin region containing strong, flexible connective tissue It has blood vessels Composed of two layers: papillary + reticular

16 Layers of the Dermis: Layers of the dermis contain:
Connective tissue with collagen and elastic fibers Collagen fibers in this layer add strength and resiliency to the skin Elastic fibers provide stretch-recoil properties Responsible for ridges that increase friction, gripping, and produces our fingerprints

18 Hypodermis The hypodermis is a subcutaneous layer deep to the skin
It is composed of adipose & areolar connective tissue Functions include: Stores fat anchors the skin to muscles acts as a shock absorber Insulator

19 Don’t forget to chunk your notes!

20 Reticular layer of dermis
Hair shaft Pore Dermal papillae (papillary layer of dermis) Epidermis Meissner's corpuscle Free nerve ending Reticular layer of dermis Sebaceous (oil) gland Dermis Arrector pili muscle Sensory nerve fiber Eccrine sweat gland Pacinian corpuscle Hypodermis (superficial fascia) Artery Vein Hair root Adipose tissue Hair follicle Eccrine sweat gland Hair follicle receptor (root hair plexus) Figure 5.1
