2 New York State High Performance Computing Consortium
NYSTAR Matching Grant Program Providing business with the computational resources needed to accelerate product development and improve product design and performance. We provide hands on assistance to companies as they transition from in-house desktop design, engineering and modeling to far more advanced and powerful simulation and modeling enabled by high performance computing. Benefits: Accelerated product development Improvement in product design and performance Reduction in cost of physical testing Assistance in large scale data management Exposure to new talent for future workforce needs Our network of scientists and engineers have extensive knowledge in advanced modeling and computing methods in a wide array of scientific disciplines. We have powerful simulation capabilities for developing, testing, evaluating and validating new product design and performance characteristics. Sample area of expertise: finite element modeling, computational fluid dynamics, thermal analysis, thermomechanical behavior and big data analytics. Industries served include: advanced manufacturing, automotive, biotech, clean energy, multimedia, medical devices, pharmaceutical, power generation, semiconductor and software.

3 Goulds Pumps – Seneca Falls based manufacturer of high quality pumps since 1848
Challenge: Taking Goulds Pumps in-house design and modeling capability to the cutting edge of fluid dynamic modeling enabled by high performance computing. There were significant limitations with the off-the-shelf software being utilized. The pace of R&D was slowed. Solution: Computational scientists at RPI worked closely with engineers at Goulds Pumps to adopt a more accurate and streamlined modeling process. RPI introduced the company to Simmetrix, a Clifton Park, NY provider of high performance software for simulation based design. HPC-NY scientists customized Simmetrix’s software to improve performance across the entire ensemble of simulations to be executed. Result: The collaboration with HPC-NY accelerated Gould Pumps ability to innovate. The new modeling capabilities helped the company bring its new Extra Heavy Duty Slurry Pump to market. This product received Processing Magazine’s Breakthrough Product Award as well as taking top honors from the British Pump Manufacturers Association.

4 Recent referral from Ed Bogucz, Syracuse Center of Excellence
Leonardi Manufacturer, Weedsport, New York. Small, family owned manufacturer which seeks simulation and modeling assistance to validate new product design. One of the company’s largest product lines center on tree stump grinders. Leonardi has a portfolio of intellectual property for its innovations in wheel design and cutting bits. Grinders must balance sharpness for cutting wood, toughness for impact with embedded rocks, wear resistance and bottom line costs. It is seeking assistance in developing a “dynamic finite-element analysis simulation for a 30-inch diameter wheel with a tip speed of 200 mph which strikes a solid embedded rock or steel bar.” This is an HPC challenge we hope to take on.
