4 Roosevelt’s First 100 Days
First Hundred Days: FDR pushed tons of legislation through the Democratic-held Congress, kick-starting America’s road to recovery. Bank Holiday: FDR closed banks on his first day until they were financially stable enough to open. Emergency Banking Relief Act: Took the country off the gold standard; allowed FDR to regulate the banks

6 The president has announced he is going to close the nation’s banks
The president has announced he is going to close the nation’s banks. He plans to explain this idea over the radio. Choose one of the following and record it in your log. 1. You are nervous about the closing of the banks, and run to the bank to get what remains of your money before it’s too late. 2. You listen to the president’s speech, though you doubt it will do anything to help with the failure of the banks. 3. You listen to the presidents’ speech, and are optimistic that it will help stabilize the banks

8 The New Deal A series of programs designed to help America’s economy recover and give relief to its citizens during the Great Depression Goals: relief, recovery, and reform Nicknamed “alphabet soup” because of all the programs’ acronyms Keynesian economics (John Maynard Keynes): Belief that deficit spending during recessions and depressions could revive national economies

Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) Agricultural Adjustment Act (AAA) Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) Public Works Administration (PWA) Securities Exchange Commission (SEC) Federal Emergency Relief Act (FERA) Works Progress Administration (WPA) Social Security Administration (SSA) Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) National Recovery Administration (NRA) Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO) Civil Works Administration (CWA) PWA: This New Deal program provided employment in construction of airports, parks, schools and roads. The federal government hired contractors who would then hire workers CWA: This New Deal program provided employment in construction of airports, parks, schools and roads. The federal government would hire these workers directly NRA: This New Deal program was hands on in industry. It controlled industrial production and prices and created codes for fair competition  CIO: This New Deal program organized industrial unions, skilled and unskilled workers

12 FDR’s First Term Good Neighbor Policy: A plan to improve relations with Latin-America, by nullifying the Monroe Doctrine, Roosevelt Corollary, and Platt Amendment.

13 21st Amendment Congress is voting on whether to repeal the 18th Amendment (Prohibition). Select one of the following numbers and record on your travel log.

14 21st Amendment 1. You are tired of news stories of the violence of organized crime and thus support the amendment. 2. You think it is dangerous morally, and sets a bad precedent to repeal a Constitutional law, so you don’t support the amendment 3. People are drinking anyway. Repealing the law would allow for more jobs and the government could tax the liquor. You support the amendment.

15 Roosevelt’s Critics American Liberty League: A group of wealthy conservatives that fought against the “socialistic institutions” of the New Deal Father Coughlin: Catholic priest with a well-known radio program; denounced the New Deal for not doing enough for the poor Dr. Francis Townsend: Felt the government had not done enough to provide relief for the nation’s ailing and elderly Proposed a $200/mo. Federal pension for the elderly. Would increase spending and open up jobs Would inspire the creation of the SSA

Roosevelt’s Critics Huey P. “Kingfisher” Long Senator rom Louisiana Claimed the New Deal didn’t do enough for America’s truly destitute “Share Our Wealth” campaign – Would put a cap on personal wealth, and distribute the excess money to the poor. “Every Man A King!”
