Obtaining food 1. __Producers_____ or ___Autotrophs____ -
Organisms that _produce__ their own food (organic chemicals such as glucose) using energy from light by ___photosynthesis____ or from inorganic chemicals.
2
__plants_____, ____algae___ and some __bacteria___ are autotrophs.
3
2. ___Consumers____ or ___Heterotrophs____ are organisms that do not make their own food
. They need to _eat__. This group includes ___animals/humans____, ___fungi____ and most ___bacteria____.
4
Types of heterotrophs Heterotrophs that eat only plants are called __herbivores____. Heterotrophs that eat only animals are called ____carnivores___. Heterotrophs that eat both plants or animals are called ___omnivores____.
5
Photosynthesis ___Photosynthesis___ is the process of converting __light_ energy into __chemical____ energy, in the form of ___glucose____.
6
The general equation for photosynthesis is:
6 CO H2O C6H12O6 + 6 O2 6 carbon dioxide and 6 water In the presence of light react to form 1 glucose and 6 oxygen
7
So when a plant undergoes photosynthesis, it changes __carbon dioxide_ and _water__
into __glucose__ gives off _oxygen__ as a waste product.

Light Light comes in __waves__.
These waves are of different lengths or __wavelengths____. Different wavelengths of light have different___colors___. White light contains __all___ the different wavelengths.
10
The visible spectrum of light:
Red Orange Yellow Green Blue Indigo Violet
11
How pigment works _Pigments____ are substances that absorb and reflect different wavelengths of light. The color you see is the color that is being ___reflected___ and all the others are being absorbed.
12
but __black__ absorbs all the wavelengths of light.
__White___reflects all the wavelengths of light, but __black__ absorbs all the wavelengths of light.
13
Why leaves are green Leaves contain the green pigment, __chlorophyll___. Being green enables the plant to absorb light wavelengths at _both__ ends of the spectrum, but prevents the leaf from getting too ___hot___ since it doesn’t absorb all of the wavelengths like the color black does.
14
Leaf color change Leaves also contain __carotenoids____, pigments that are yellow, red or orange. Since most of the pigment of the leaf is ___chlorophyll___, it usually covers up the carotenoid colors. Leaves change color in the fall because the __chlorophyll_ is destroyed by the cold temperatures before the carotenoids, their colors are visible.
15
Where photosynthesis occurs
Photosynthesis takes place in the ___chloroplasts ___ of the cell, where the chlorophyll pigment is stored.
