Genetics Vocabulary Gene – a location on DNA that codes for a trait; located on both sets of chromosomes Allele – the specific gene that comes either from the male parent or the female parent Example: Red is dominant to white.

P P P p p p Genetics Vocabulary
Dominant – an allele that codes for a trait: hides the recessive (ex. R – capital letter = red) Recessive – an allele the codes for a trait: hidden by dominant (ex. r – lower case letter = white) P P P p p p
3
Genetics Vocabulary Homozygous – same type of alleles (ex. RR or rr)
Heterozygous – different types of alleles (ex. Rr)
4
Genetics Vocabulary Genotype – refers to the alleles (ex. RR, Rr, rr)
Phenotype – refers to what is seen (ex. Red or White)

Genetics Vocabulary Directions:
Match the correct definition with the appropriate term: 1. Recessive 2. Heterozygous 3. Genotype 4. Phenotype 5. Allele 6. Homozygous 7. Gene 8. Dominant A. The specific region on DNA that codes for a trait B. The physical expression of the combination of alleles C. Having different types of alleles D. An allele that can be heterozygous or homozygous to show itself E. The genetic combination of alleles F. An allele that need to be homozygous to show itself G. A version of the gene, comes from mom or dad H. Having the same type of alleles
