1 Bloomberg Weighs an Independent White House Run (p. 5)
Thanks for coming in…

2 Directions You will be going through each slide and answering the questions and completing the assignments. You can hand write the assignment, or you can choose to answer in a word document. Either way, it will be handed in (not sent by ) by Wednesday’s class. There should be little to no talking, and my expectation is that you stay in the classroom to complete the assignment. If you leave, it will not be good for you. Especially you Katie B.!

3 Vocabulary Define the following as it pertains to the article:
wild card, roil, leftist, fiscal, advocate, mainstream, moderate, conservative, stances, pragmatism, infrastructure

4 Question Sheet #1 Answer without research in your own terms:
What is a political party? Why do we have political parties? What do political parties do? Can someone run for president if they are not in one of the two major political parties? Answers:

5 Independent Candidates
Read the link, and answer the following: Which, if any, have the greatest chance to impact the election or even win?

6 Third Party Candidates
Third party candidates can have relevance in elections even though none has ever won the presidency. Ex: Theodore Roosevelt split from the Republican party to run as a third party candidate in 1912, beating the official Republican ticket but losing to Woodrow Wilson in the general election. More recently, Ross Perot ran as an independent in 1992 and won almost 20 percent of the popular vote. 5. Read the article about Michael Bloomberg’s possible independent White House run and highlight all of the ways mentioned in the article that Bloomberg could impact the presidential race if he ran

7 Bloomberg Running You have been asked to advise Bloomberg about whether or not he should run. First you must conduct research to learn the following: What are Bloomberg’s views on key issues and how do they differ from current candidates’? What success or impact have independent candidates recently had on presidential elections? What would be three reasons he should run? What would be three reasons he shouldn’t run? You are to present a short “pitch” to Bloomberg with your advice and the evidence that supports their recommendation. It will be due next class. It can be in any form, creativity is always rewarded (public speeches and videos will be shown in class).
