Section 4- John Adams’s Presidency The Election of 1796 The Alien & Sedition Acts President Adams & the XYZ Affair 1st time more than one candidate running for president Political parties developed during Washington’s presidency Alexander Hamilton – Federalist Party wanted strong federal government Thomas Jefferson – Democratic-Republican Party wanted to limit gov’t power Party differences based on where people lived >cities =Federalists > farms = Democratic Republicans Tough campaign but Adams won Adams – tough to follow Washington as president Needed to gain peoples trust Many Democratic Republicans continued to side with France Federalist passed Alien & Sedition Acts >One of laws forbade publishing or voicing criticism of the federal government These Acts violated the 1st amendment Jefferson & Madison wrote the Virginia & Kentucky Resolutions A New President The U.S. & France Peace Efforts Preparations for War Adams was a leading patriot during Revolution Fearing war, Adams asked for 30 more navy ships Adams decision for no war stunned Federalists Tried to improve relations with France by sending a diplomat Lacked Washington’s dignity-seemed distant & cold French agents demanded a bribe to speak to diplomat Adams decided the U.S. should have a peacetime army U.S. & French ships began to fight in Caribbean The bribe was called the XYZ Affair & some called for war with France Adams did not want war, he tried to use peace negotiations Adams sent representative to France & made peace treaty Opponents respected Adams’s hard work & intelligence
