Plant Characteristics
Multicellular Autotrophic (photosynthesis) Surrounded by cell walls containing cellulose (polysaccharide) Store reserve food as amylose (starch) Examples include familiar organisms such as trees, flowers, herbs, bushes, grasses, vines, ferns, mosses, and green algae. Botany = the scientific study of plants
3
Have chloroplasts containing chlorophyll
Most are terrestrial (land based) although there are exceptions
4
Plant Divisions
6
Taxonomy Land plants are divided into two groups based on the presence or absence of an internal transport system for water and dissolved materials This is called a Vascular System Vascular Bundles
7
Nonvascular: No vessels No roots No stems No leaves
Ex: Mosses and liverworts Require a constantly moist environment
8
Vascular: Have vessels to transport food and water
They have roots, stems or leaves Ex: grass, corn, trees, flowers, bushes
9
Main Parts of Vascular Plants:
Shoots -Found above ground -Have leaves attached - Photosynthetic part of plant Roots -Found below ground -Absorb water & minerals -Anchor the plant
10
Vascular Plants Subdivided into two groups: Club Moss Seedless
Seed-bearing Club Moss
11
Seedless plants (e.g., ferns) have a vascular system but reproduce using spores.
12
Seed plants reproduce using seeds
14
Seedless Vascular Plants
Whisk ferns Horsetails
15
Seed bearing:
16
Why We Can’t do Without Plants!
Produce oxygen for the atmosphere Produce lumber for building Provide homes and food for many organisms Prevent erosion Used for food
17
More Reasons We Can’t do Without Plants!
Produce wood pulp for paper products Source of many medicines Ornamental and shade for yards Fibers such as cotton for fabric Dyes
