What is the indicator Bromothymol Blue (also known as BTB) used for?
HW: Respiration worksheet due tomorrow. #13-16 Sherlock Report due Friday, 10/7. Open Book Quiz Friday, 10/7 *Is your binder ready? Do Now: /5/16 What is the indicator Bromothymol Blue (also known as BTB) used for? BTB indicator changes color in the presence of carbon dioxide

Cell Processes Notes
3
Cellular Respiration CELLULAR RESPIRATION: cells use oxygen to release the energy stored in sugars, such as glucose. This process takes place in the mitochondria. MIGHTY MITOCHONDRIA
4
Sugar Oxygen water carbon dioxide (ATP)
The overall reaction for cellular respiration is: C6H12O O2 6H20 + 6CO energy Sugar Oxygen water carbon dioxide (ATP) Adenosine Tri Phosphate ATP is the currency of your body $$$
5
Two Types of Respiration
AEROBIC RESPIRATION: Glucose enters the mitochondria, where it is broken down when it combines with oxygen. ANEROBIC RESPIRATION: (fermentation) energy is released without oxygen. Example: Yeast cells
6
Yeast Cells Glucose is broken down into carbon dioxide,
alcohol, and A.T.P. (energy) Mr. Cicione Used in Baking Yeast Cells
7
Energy and Exercise Your muscle cells release energy by both cellular respiration (aerobic) and fermentation (anaerobic)respiration. At rest your muscles store energy.
8
Energy and Exercise During prolonged exercise your muscle cells use up their stores of energy and oxygen, so the muscle cells must rely on fermentation to break down sugars. The waste products of fermentation is lactic acid, which can cause a burning sensation in your muscles.
