5 Approaching the question
Checklist Be calm and read the question twice. Then highlight what the question is asking you to do. Find the quotations from the extract that you want to analyse and annotate some ideas. Then make a quick plan of 3 other quotations/ideas in the play that you want to link the extract to so that you develop your thoughts.

6 Think, pair, share What should you consider if the question is male aggression/masculinity/conflict? Is it just about fighting? Is it just about men? What about stereotypes?

7 Male aggression some key scenes and acts
Lads, Lads, Lads! Act 2 Scene 4 Act 1 Scene 1- Gregory and Sampson vs Abraham and Balthasar then it leads to Tybalt and Benvolio plus citizens fighting. Lots of sexual references and conflict. Act 2 Scene 4- Benvolio, Mercutio and Romeo are out on the streets discussing how Tybalt has threatened Romeo to a duel. Mercutio compliments Tybalt’s duelling skills. Then the Nurse arrives “bawdy hand” (Mercutio) “my pump is well flowered” (Romeo) saying the Nurse should hide her face with a fan. Act 3 Scene 1- the fight scene Mercutio and Tybalt’s death. Act 3 Scene 5- Lord Capulet’s aggression with Juliet “I will drag thee on a hurdle” and “my finger’s itch” Act 4 Scene 3- Juliet drinks the potion but explores the idea of bashing in her own skull with bones of her ancestors if she wakes up early in the tomb.

Zoom in on key words/phrases/punctuation Keep mentioning what SHAKESPEARE is trying to achieve. Show off knowledge about the Elizabethan Era and what is being represented. Keep developing your ideas (lots about one quotation)!
