Inherited Disorders Effective Participator Reflective Learner Self
L.O: Understand how some disorders are inherited and the ethical issues of screening embryos Grade 4: Describe what is meant by an inherited disorder, recognise examples and describe symptoms of an inherited disorder. Grade 6: Name examples of inherited disorders, such as cystic fibrosis and polydactyly. Use a genetic cross to explain how inherited disorders are passed on. Grade 8: Evaluate in detail the use of genetic engineering to cure inherited disorders. Use a genetic cross to predict the probability of a child inheriting a genetic disorder. Odd one out Which is the odd one out and why? Colour blindness
Polydactyly Cystic fibrosis Huntington’s HIV

Cystic Fibrosis This disease is caused by a gene mutation.
About 1 in 2000 children are affected. The lungs of sufferers produce a thick, sticky mucus. The mucus can block the air passages and the tubes that carry digestive enzymes. Sufferers have difficulty with breathing and absorbing food. At present there is no cure.
6
Cystic Fibrosis The disease is caused by a recessive allele.
Carriers of the disease, Cc, are symptom free. Only homozygous recessive individuals, cc, develop the disease.
7
Polydactyly This is when a baby is born with extra fingers or toes.
Some people have the extra diget removed and some do not. The most common form is caused by a dominant allele. This means there are no ‘carriers’ as if you have the gene, you have the disorder. If you are PP or Pp you have polydactyly, if you are pp you do not.
