What are the main parts of the human nervous system?
Q.Q. 4/2/19 What are the main parts of the human nervous system? The brain, the spinal cord and nerves
2
Unit #10: Human Body Systems
The Nervous System
3
What is the role of the Nervous System?
Your nervous system receives information both inside and outside of your body. Then, it processes the information and forms a response to it. The basic unit of the nervous system is a type of cell called a neuron.
4
Neuron Structure Neurons carry messages from one part of your body to another. A neuron has 3 basic parts. 1) Dendrites – carry message TO the cell body 2) Cell body – relays message; contains main cell structures (i.e. nucleus, mitochondria, etc.) 3) Axon- – carry message AWAY from the cell body

Receiving Impulse! Neuron Structure Animation Dendrite Dendrites carry nerve impulses toward a neuron’s cell body. Cell Body The cell body controls the cell’s basic functions. Synapse The space between an axon of 1 neuron and the dendrites of another. Axon Impulses travel along axon away from cell to next cell. Myelin Sheath Some axons are covered by a myelin sheath that increases the speed of an impulse. *multiple schlerosis disease animation

Nervous System The nervous system consists of two major divisions: central nervous system peripheral nervous system. *The central nervous system - the control center of the body. It includes the brain and spinal cord. *The peripheral nervous system - all the other body nerves, connecting to the brain and spinal cord. *peripheral = to the sides (peripheral vision)

8
The Spinal Cord The spinal cord is a thick column of nerve tissue that connects the brain to nerves in the peripheral nervous system.
9
Major Parts of the Brain
1) The cerebrum- main region that receives messages from sense organs, controls thinking, memory, communication, and reasoning. 2) The cerebellum- coordinates your body’s movements and helps you keep your balance. 3) The brain stem- controls many of your body’s involuntary actions
12
1) The Cerebrum The largest region of the brain and is responsible for conscious activities and intelligence, learning and judgment. Divided into 2 Hemispheres (Left and Right) Each hemisphere deals with mainly the opposite side of the body. The hemispheres are connected by a band of tissue called the corpus callosum

4 Lobes (regions) of the Cerebrum:
Frontal Lobe – Evaluating consequences, making judgments, forming plans Parietal Lobe – Reading and Speech Temporal Lobe – Hearing and Smell Occipital Lobe - Vision
15
Mixed Messages Test how well your brain can handle conflicting messages. Try This Read the list of words, saying the color of each word as your partner times you. Do not read the words, rather identify their colors.

Mixed Messages
17
Cerebellum – second largest region of brain
Coordinates and balances the action of muscles This enables the body to move gracefully and efficiently. “Bell” shape = “Ball” in the back”!
18
3) Brain Stem – connects the brain and the spinal cord
Important functions include: regulation of blood pressure, heart rate, breathing and swallowing. Consists of 3 structures: the midbrain – noise & light adjusting Pons - breathing Medulla oblongata– heart rate, swallowing
