4 3. One day a student recorded the speed of blue cars and red cars on a neaby by road. The average speed for the red cars was 50 mph while the average speed of the blue cars was 58 mph. The student concluded that red paint (cause) makes cars go faster (effect). Which statement identifies an error in the students conclusion? a. The conclusion claims that there is a cause and effect without evidence. b. The observation was made on several highways. c. The conclusion was made based on only two types of cars. d. The observation shows information for several times of day.

5 4. A student studying geology wanted to determine the mass and volume of a small rock.
Which set of tools should the student use to determine both properties? c. d.

7 6. A factory is producing a new machine designed to reduce the amount of air pollution in houses. The machine was produced and sold to the public. After several months, reports show the machine is not working correctly. Which of these most likely caused this outcome? a. The manufacturing of the machine was done over several months. b. The designers did not test other types of machines. c. The prototype was not thoroughly tested before being sold to the public. d. The proper cost analysis was not performed.

17 Can I? Can I use a dichotomous key to identify an unknown organism? TOC # 18 Dichotomous key and Branching diagram Notes

18 What is a Dichotomous Key?
Definition A dichotomous key is a tool that uses a series of paired statements to help someone identify the name of an organism when they are looking at the organism’s features. Purpose The purpose of the key is to name a creature. Sounds Like “Di-” means two. “Dichotomous” means divided into two parts. Objective: Can I use a dichotomous key to identify an unknown organism?

19 How to work a Dichotomous Key
Step 1: Select the organism (Hint: look at this organism the entire time you are answering questions/ statements). Step 2: ALWAYS start at the first set of questions/ statements (1a and 1b). Step 3: Once you answer the questions/ statements, follow the directions to the next set of questions/ statements. Step 4: Continue answering statements until you reach a name. This is the scientific name. It should be a 2 part name: Genus species. Step 5: Select the next organism and repeat steps 2-4. Objective: Can I use a dichotomous key to identify an unknown organism?

20 Whole Class Objective: Can I use a dichotomous key to identify an unknown organism?

21 Group Practice Fungus Classification Key
1 a. Grows shelf-like on woon go to 2 b. Grows on a stem out of the ground go to 3 2 a. Pattern of semi-circular stripes turkey tail b. No pattern of stripes or dots beefsteak 3 a. Has a round cap fly agraric b. Has an irregularl shaped cap go to 4 4 a. Cap is funnel-shaped golden chanterelle b.Cap is brain shaped common morel Based on the key above, which fungus is shown? A.turkey tail B.beefsteak C.golden chanterelle D.common morel Objective: Can I use a dichotomous key to identify an unknown organism?

22 Create a Dichotomous Key
Now you will create a dichotomous key in your group. Every group member will work on the same idea, but every individual needs their own written key. You will assign each school supply a different “code name.” One group member should write code names on a separate sheet of paper. Example: A pencil might be called whatyacallit in your group. At the end, make sure that your key makes sense by going through the steps for each school supply and seeing that your item matches your code name. If you have remaining time, try to incorporate additional school supplies that you have with you into your key. Objective: Can I use a dichotomous key to identify an unknown organism?

23 What is a Branching Diagram?
Definition A branching diagram is a diagram that shows the relationships among biological species based upon similarities and differences in the physical and/or genetic characteristics. Purpose The purpose of a branching diagram is to examine the relationship and common characteristics between organisms. Objective: Can I use a dichotomous key to identify an unknown organism?

24 Whole Class Objective: Can I use a dichotomous key to identify an unknown organism?

25 Use dry erase markers to complete on one desk at your group
Group Practice Frog Kangaroo Snake Rabbit Air breathing; ability to live on land Lay eggs on dry land; dry skin Fur; live birth Young develop fully inside mother Use dry erase markers to complete on one desk at your group Objective: Can I use a dichotomous key to identify an unknown organism?
