You are a PUBLIC Figure At the ballpark or stadium, including parking lot At restaurants At family/friend gatherings Even if not the sport you officiate! Family/friends as quest at game Favorite school/team Logos Clothes Car stickers, license plates, etc. “Scratch” yourself from working their games

3 Responsibilities of Officials
Social Media – Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snap Chat Just DON’T DO IT! (including your family members) Remove any and all references to being an official Do not Like, Comment, Retweet or forward any messages that contain subject matter that could offend someone Do not Like, Comment, Retweet or forward any messages that would portray you as a fan of a team Do not comment about games you are assigned, your partners, schools, coaches, or spectators Refer all media request to your assignment secretary or association spokesperson REMEMBER – you are a public figure

Conduct continually under scrutiny “Get it right” society An sports official is held to a higher standard Sports officials are responsible for the integrity of the game

Always representing the conference, league, association On the field Off the field Communication Clothing with logo of conference, league, association Verbal Social Media Speak well of officiating and your conference, league, association

Actions under microscope by other officials You are being watched Appearance Physical – stay in shape Dress – before & after the game Don’t go to a restaurant / bar in uniform Discretion when dressing room is the parking lot Conversations in public places (example: restaurant after a game) Officiating is a “business” – take it seriously

Communication Schools – coaches, administrators Partners Association / conference Could become public, including what’s said “between the lines” Remember – silence cannot be quoted!

Give back to officiating Be a mentor Educate others, even if not an official Promote officiating in a positive light Take a leadership role in the LABUA Remember where you came from

Leadership Have Integrity Being Honest Strong moral principles Enforce the rules “Doing the right thing when no one is looking.” Practice Self-Development Continual improvement – ALWAYS! No better than your last call – good or bad Be a sponge – a student of the game and officiating Study Group

10 Responsibilities of Officials
Be Human Be Kind – treat others the way you want to be treated Be Humble the sport is not about you! be happy for your fellow official who gets “the big assignment” Be an Ambassador of our sport
