7 6th Grade Course Requirements
1) Reading (Regular or Pre-AP) 2) English (Regular or Pre-AP) 3) Math (Regular or Pre-AP) 4) Science 5) Social Studies 6) PE and Health (one semester of each) 7) Fine Art Elective* 8) Elective* *Electives may be replaced with Math/Reading Workshops depending on passing of 5th grade Math/Reading STAAR.

8 What is Pre-AP? Pre-AP courses have a faster paced and require more preparation than regular courses. You will be required to do more work outside of class. In 6th grade, Pre-AP courses are offered in Reading, English, and Math. Any student may enroll in Pre-AP classes, but it is strongly advised that you speak with your 5th grade teacher about their recommendation. Parent signature is required on the back of the course card for students that choose Pre-AP.

9 Pre-AP Reading/English
Pre-AP English and Reading are challenging courses that typically involve more projects and hands-on assignments. Pre-AP English must be taken with Pre-AP Reading It is strongly recommended that you consult with your child’s current English/Reading teachers.

10 Pre-AP Math Pre-AP Math in 6th grade requires students to fulfill all the same requirements as a regular Math, plus some 7th grade requirements. If you are on the Pre-AP Math track, and you continue through 8th grade, then you will take Algebra I in 8th grade. Algebra I is a high school level math class. This means you will get high school credit for successfully completing Algebra I in 8th grade.

11 P.E. and Health All 6th graders are required to take:
One semester of PE One semester of Health PE uniforms are required: Black shorts and a gray t-shirt You may purchase these at Ike or bring your own (without graphics).

12 Electives All 6th graders are allowed 2 elective periods:
One fine art One other elective See electives detailed on the next slides.

13 Fine Arts (Remember: You must choose at least 1)
Orchestra Band Choir Art Theater Arts

14 Orchestra Students will learn to play stringed instruments such as the violin, cello, viola, or string bass. There are beginner and intermediate options for 6th grade students.

15 Band Students will have the opportunity to play an instrument. The student and parent will meet with the Band director to determine which instrument the student will play. Students will have the opportunity to participate in concerts and contests after school

16 Choir Students will sing, learn to sight-read, and learn proper vocal techniques.

17 Art Art at Ike is an introduction to drawing, painting, sculpture, and ceramics.

18 Theater Arts Theater arts is a course that emphasizes acting and drama.

19 Other Electives Available
Besides the one required Fine Art elective, students are required to take one other elective. Choices include: AVID (application required) Robotics/ Technology Applications Robotics/ Technology Applications GT Debate

20 AVID AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination.
This course is aimed at students taking one or more Pre- AP classes. The course will help student to prepare for college eligibility and success. Application is required.

21 Technology Applications
This course is for lovers of computers and technology. Technology Applications is technology-driven, and includes robotics and design and analysis of robotic and intelligent systems. GT Technology Applications also available Student must be identified GT in 5th grade.

22 Debate For Debate, students will research, write, and present original works. Students will also critically evaluate works from others. Students will learn to speak in front of others and present their works in a skilled manner.

23 Math and Reading Workshops (SSI)
Students are placed in Reading Workshop or Math Workshop if they are not successful on the 5th grade STAAR test. Workshop classes are additional Math and Reading courses students take in order to help them to be successful on 6th grade STAAR. Workshop classes take the place of an elective.

24 Dual Language Students
(E.S. Counselors – please omit this slide if you do not have a Dual Language program) Dual Language program requires 6th grade students to take Spanish Literature. Students will be limited to 1 Fine Arts elective choice.

25 Pride Camp 2019 Pride Camp is for all incoming 6th grade students.
It is held the week before school begins. You will get your locker and you will meet your teachers. Students and parents will be able to purchase Ike spirit shirts, PE uniforms, and other spirit items.

26 Notes to remember Students must take Reading Pre-AP and English Pre-AP together. A student considering Pre-AP Math must begin this coursework in 6th grade. You cannot take 6th grade regular Math, and then 7th grade Pre-AP Math.

27 More notes to remember You must rank electives 1 – 3.
Student and parent must both sign course card. Parent signature is required on the back of the page if you choose a Pre-AP class.
