2. Yuri Gagarin
Yuri Gagarin was the first man in space. He took off on April 12th 1961 in his Vostok 1 spacecraft. He made a 108 minute orbit flight.

3. John Glenn
John Glenn was the first American to orbit the earth. He took off February 20th, After his flight he became one of the most celebrated astronauts and a symbol of American ambition.

4. Mariner 2
The mission of the Mariner 2 was to fly by Venus and retrieve data on the planet’s atmosphere. Mariner 2 was sent out after the Mariner 1 failed after take off. The device had 2 solar cell wings to fly, and discovered that Venus had no magnetic field, hot surface temperatures and much more.

5. Luna 9
The Luna 9 was the first spacecraft to land on the moon and take pictures. The spacecraft took off on January 31st, 1966 and was a spacecraft that had 2 parts. When it landed on the moon, it took pictures showing rocks and the horizon.

6. Neil Armstrong
Neil Armstrong was the first man to step on the moon. He was flying in the Apollo 11 with the crew members Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins. On July 20th, 1969 the Apollo 11 took flight to the moon.

7. Salyut 1
The purpose of Salyut 1 was to test the elements of a space station. The Salyut was big enough to fit eight big chairs and it took off on April 19th, Salyut checked the design, units and onboard systems of a space station as well as many other things.

8. Venera 9
The Venera 9 spacecraft entered Venus orbit after it took off on June 8th, They used a French 3500 angstrom UV photometer to help explore cloud layers from Venus. Venera 9 took many picture including a 180° panorama of the rocky Venus surface.

9. Vikings
The Viking job was to take picture of Mar’s surface. The spacecraft took off on August 20th, 1975 with a orbiter and a lander. The Viking also got atmospheric water vapor measurements from Mars.

10. Voyager 1 and 2
Voyager 2 was launched on August 20th, 1977, while Voyager 1 was launched on September 5th, The Voyagers took pictures of Jupiter. The Voyagers would work for another 20 years until their nuclear generators no longer run.
