Laboratory Equipment

Beaker Beakers hold solids or liquids that will not release gases when reacted or are unlikely to splatter if stirred or heated.

Beaker Tongs Beaker tongs are used to move beakers containing hot liquids

Graduated cylinder A graduated cylinder is used to accurately measure volumes of liquids.

Erlenmeyer Flask Erlenmeyer flasks hold solids or liquids that may release gases during a reaction or that are likely to splatter if stirred or heated.

Ring Stand Ringstands holds iron rings that allow a safe and convenient way to perform reactions that require heating using a Bunsen burner.

Wire Gauze Wire gauze sits on the iron ring to provide a place to stand a beaker.

Bunsen burner and hose Bunsen burners are used for the heating of nonvolatile liquids and solids. The hose is the carrier of gas to the Bunsen burner.

Striker Strikers are used to light Bunsen burners.
The flints on strikers are expensive. Do not operate the striker repeatedly just to see the sparks!

Test Tube Used to hold small amounts of liquids.

Triple beam balance Used to measure masses very precisely. With the pan empty, move the three sliders on the three beams to their leftmost positions, so that the balance reads zero.

Scoopula Used to scoop small amounts of solid (fine powders, crystals) out of their containers.

Stirring rod A glass rod is used to manually stir solutions. It can also be used to transfer a single drop of a solution.
