PEER PRESSURE Sussman & Ames (2001) found that friend and peer use of drugs is a strong predictor of drug use among teenagers, with deviant peer groupings role modelled and offering drugs, demonstrating the influence of social networks in determining levels of individual vulnerability However Sussman & Ames (2001) also found that family conflict, poor supervision or drug-use tolerance by the parents, family modelling of drug-using behaviour and deviant peer group association all influences the initiation of drugs, which suggests peers are just one of several social influences relating to addiction vulnerability.

PEER PRESSURE - EVALUATION
It is possible that instead of peer groups influencing dependency behaviours, individuals who are already dependent could select peers that conform to their own dependency behaviour patterns. Bullers et al ( 2001) performed a longitudinal study of over 1200 adults, which found that peoples peer groups predicted individual drinking, but individual drinking also predicted subsequent peer group drinking. This suggests that social selection is a stronger influence than social influence. Similar results have been found in studies of adolescents.
